In a season destined for the history books, Joyce Edwards has rewritten what it means to be dominant in womenโs college basketball. The South Carolina standout not only led her team to an undefeated season but shattered multiple scoring records, earning the title of โBest of the Bestโ in a campaign that electrified fans and stunned opponents.
The 6’2″ forward from Camden, South Carolina, displayed a combination of finesse, athleticism, and court intelligence that has become the hallmark of her game. Averaging 24.8 points per game, Edwards broke South Carolinaโs single-season scoring record and led the SEC in total points. Her ability to take over gamesโwhether by draining mid-range jumpers, slashing through defenses, or dominating in the paintโhas made her one of the most feared players in the country.
Coach Dawn Staley praised Edwards not only for her stats but for her leadership. โJoyce brings more than just numbers. Sheโs a culture-setter. She shows up every day to make her teammates better,โ Staley said.
Among her many highlights this season was a 42-point performance against LSU, where she single-handedly rallied the Gamecocks from a double-digit deficit, sealing the win with a buzzer-beater three that instantly went viral. That game epitomized the essence of Edwardsโ impactโnot just as a scorer, but as a clutch performer.
Her contributions have not gone unnoticed. Edwards was recently named the Naismith Player of the Year, the SEC Player of the Year, and was the top vote-getter for the AP All-American First Team. She also etched her name into South Carolinaโs history as the first freshman to lead the team in scoring and rebounds in the same season.
Off the court, Edwards is equally inspiringโactive in community initiatives and a 4.0 student in sports management. Her humility and dedication have endeared her to fans nationwide, many of whom are already calling her a future WNBA superstar.
With the NCAA Tournament trophy now sitting in Columbia and her legend firmly cemented, Joyce Edwards has not only had a historic seasonโsheโs set a new standard for greatness in college basketball.
As banners rise and the confetti settles, one thing is certain: Joyce Edwards isnโt just the best this seasonโsheโs one of the best ever.
