Detroit Lions fight song: How did ‘Gridiron Heroes’ start, other things to know
If you’ve ever been to Ford Field for a Detroit Lions game, you are familiar with the team’s fight song which is played after every Lions touchdown.
The song, “Gridiron Heroes,” has been with the Lions since 1938, nearly the entire time the franchise has been in Detroit. The song was written by Wayne State music professor and band director Graham T. Overgard at the request of team owner G.A. Richards, who asked him to write a fight song for the team.
Overgard also served as the team’s entertainment director from 1937 to 1968, where he would coordinate performances by the Wayne State marching band as halftime entertainment. The song is played after every Lions score at home. The song has been around since the 1930s, making it one of the longest-standing team traditions in the NFL.
