The Pittsburgh Steelers will need to look elsewhere for a potential quarterbacks coach.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers will not have the opportunity to land one of the top quarterback coaches in the NFL as Jerrod Johnson accepted a contract extension with the Houston Texans, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
Johnson interviewed with the Steelers for their offensive coordinator position, which they ended up filling with former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith.
After the hiring, the question arose on if the team would consider offering Johnson a job as their QB coach/passing game coordinator.
That question has now been shut down as Johnson stays in Houston. The Steelers will reportedly move on from their current quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan.
Sullivan, who took over as play-caller after the team fired Matt Canada, has had interviews with the Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints for their open OC positions. Even if he’s not hired, though, Pittsburgh is expected to replace him.
With whom remains the question, but it will not be Johnson.
The Steelers will likely look for someone younger with plenty of upside, especially if Smith is viewed as a potential head coach candidate again in the future.
