A & M. Only a few months have passed since he and Nebraska agreed to an eight-year contract extension in November 2023, when he made the choice to resign as the Huskers athletic director. Alberts notified the University of Nebraska personnel via email that he was leaving his position as director of athletics in the summer of 2021.
“More Productive Employees, Alberts wrote, “I am writing to let you know that I told interim President Kabourek earlier today that I am leaving my position as director of athletics in order to take on the same responsibilities at Texas A&M. “I am very sorry for the timing and that I was not able to communicate these changes to you in person.”
“Thank you so much for all that you have done to make Husker Athletics so special,” Alberts went on to say. “I am appreciative of all that we have achieved together, and I think Nebraska is in a good position to handle the changes that the industry will inevitably undergo as a result of you. Although there will be difficult choices to be made, a unified vision, and excellent execution required, I have faith that Nebraska’s leadership will up to the challenge. High moral standards, a dedicated and skilled workforce, and great coaches characterize Nebraska Athletics. Being able to collaborate with you to achieve extraordinary results was an honor. Once again, thank you.”
Because of Alberts’ early departure under his new deal, Nebraska is owed more than $4 million in a buyout.
Nebraska’s Board of Regents received a “call to action” in a statement delivered by Governor Jim Pillen on Thursday morning. It has been nearly seven months since Ted Carter announced his resignation from the institution to take the same post at Ohio State, and the office of president remains unfilled.
Over 150 years have passed since the founding of the University of Nebraska. It is significantly larger than any one individual, according to Pillen. “But leadership matters, and the long-term success of our University depends immensely on having committed public servants as its leaders.”
53-year-old Alberts was a linebacker for Nebraska in the early 1990s and was named unanimously to the All-America team in 1993. In the north end zone of Memorial Stadium, Alberts’ No. 34 jersey is retired, and his name is listed beneath the scoreboard with the names of other Husker greats.
In 1993, Alberts assisted Nebraska in trying to win a national championship. Alberts plays with a cast on his arm against Florida State despite suffering a late-season injury, and he sacks Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Charlie Ward three times in the team’s 18-16 loss.
Alberts was chosen by the Indianapolis Colts as the fifth overall choice in the 1994 NFL Draft.
