The latest rugby headlines from Wales and beyond

    Fresh tragedy hits Fiji

The Fijian World Cup squad has been hit by tragedy for the second time during the tournament after the father of hooker Sam Matavesi died.

Sireli Matavesi, who played rugby for Cornwall and Camborne after moving to the UK following a tour in the 1980s, was confirmed to have died following an illness. As well as Northampton Saints star Sam, his other sons Joel and Josh both played rugby to a high level, with the latter also representing Fiji while playing for the likes of Ospreys and Newcastle at club level.

The tragic news comes ahead of the Pacific Islanders’ quarter-final clash with England and just days after centre Josua Tuisova decided to stay in France for his side’s match against Portugal after learning that his seven-year-old son had died.

A statement issued on Wednesday read: “It is with heavy hearts that The Fiji Rugby Union, The Flying Fijians Team and Head Coach Simon Raiwalui share the news of our hooker Sam Matavesi and former Flying Fijian Josh Matavesi, who have lost their beloved father, the Late Sireli Matavesi.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the Matavesi family during this incredibly difficult time. We keep Sam, Josh and their families in our thoughts and prayers.”

Eddie Jones ‘to take Japan job’

Eddie Jones will leave his job with Australia and return to Japan, a bombshell report in the Japanese media has claimed.

The Wallabies boss has found himself under increased pressure after his side crashed out of the World Cup following a disastrous run of results which saw them lose to Fiji and Wales after a winless run in the Rugby Championship.

Ahead of the game against Wales, Jones was also the subject of allegations that he underwent a secret job interview for the role of Japan’s head coach, having led them to a famous win over South Africa while in charge of the Brave Blossoms at the 2015 World Cup.

The 63-year-old has denied the claims, describing them as “bulls***”, while players and union chiefs have taken him at his word, but a new report from Japanese sports website Sponichi has alleged that he will return to his former role after just nine months in charge of Australia.

“Current Australian national team coach Eddie Jones is expected to return as the successor to Joseph,” the story read, via Fox Sports.

“This spring, Masato Tsuchida, president of the Japan Association, with whom he has had a honeymoon relationship since his days at Suntory, contacted him.

“Contract negotiations have been held privately behind the scenes, and preparations are underway for (his) return (for the first time) since the 2015 World Cup, which led them to a historic three wins.”
