Who is Russell Wilson? Pittsburgh Steelers’ new QB has only played in Cincinnati once

Quarterback Russell Wilson is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to multiple reports Sunday night.

Wilson tweeted about it late Sunday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported via Twitter/X that the Denver Broncos will pay $38 million of Wilson’s salary while Wilson plays for the Steelers.

Born in Cincinnati, Wilson, 35, hasn’t played in Cincinnati since October 2015, when he played for the Seattle Seahawks.

Wilson has only faced the Cincinnati Bengals twice.

Wilson completed 15-of-23 attempts for 213 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Seahawks’ 27-24 loss to the Bengals in 2015.

Wilson completed 14-of-20 for 195 yards with two TDs and no INTs in Seattle’s 21-20 win against the Bengals in September 2019. It was Zac Taylor’s first game as Cincinnati’s head coach.

Wilson was born at Cincinnati’s Christ Hospital.

Harrison B. Wilson III lived in Clifton while working as a lawyer for Procter & Gamble. His wife, Tammy, attended Xavier University nursing school, and later worked at the University of Cincinnati.

The family relocated to Richmond, Virginia, when Russell was about one year old.

“I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the ‘nasty Nati,'” Russell said in 2015 ahead of the Seahawks’ game in Cincinnati. “I’m excited about it.”

Pittsburgh QBs only threw 13 TD passes last season.

Kenny Pickett threw six TD passes in 12 games. Mitchell Trubisky threw four TD passes in five games. Mason Rudolph threw three TD passes in four games.

Two of Rudolph’s three TD passes came in a 34-11 win against the Bengals in Pittsburgh on December 23.

The Steelers won 16-10 in Cincinnati in November despite not throwing a TD pass.

Pickett is the only QB Pittsburgh currently has under contract.

Pickett, the Steelers’ first-round draft pick in 2022, started Pittsburgh’s November win in Cincinnati. Wilson could compete with him for the starting QB job.

Trubisky signed with the Buffalo Bills last week. Rudolph is a free agent.

Wilson threw 26 TD passes last season, twice as many as Pittsburgh QBs combined.

In his second season in Denver, Wilson threw just eight interceptions in 15 games.

In 10 seasons for the Seahawks, Wilson threw 292 TD passes and 87 INTs, and was a nine-time Pro Bowler.

Wilson led Seattle to a Super Bowl title in February 2014.
