As Jimmy Butler reportedly is pursuing a contract extension from the Miami Heat, his comments during the Dallas Wings vs. Los Angeles Sparks game Friday night sent the internet into a whirlwind. While Butler’s future remains somewhat of an unknown, he had the full attention of Los Angeles Lakers fans after one specific in-game message.
As Nikki Kay of Spectrum Sports highlighted, Butler stated that “22 looks good in purple and gold.”
Of course, 22 is Butler’s number with the Heat. And as the idea of a potential Butler trade swirls should the Heat opt not to give him the max contract extension he’s reportedly seeking, these comments instantly turned heads.
However, after the game, Butler quickly clarified the meaning of his comments with a message on the Sparks Instagram page . He explained that he was showing love to Sparks rookie Cameron Brink and shut down the trade rumors.
“First and foremost, y’all see this shirt/jersey I’m wearing right now. 22 purple and gold says Brink, not Butler, unfortunately. Sorry LA fans,” Butler said. “But hey, shoutout to you, Cam. Thank you for all the love and support.”
Brink had a strong showing for the Sparks in an 81-72 victory, scoring 10 points with 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 26 minutes.
As for Butler, while the Lakers may be seeking a third star, it doesn’t appear Butler is destined to join LeBron James and Anthony Davis anytime soon.

While it was another title-less season for the New York Knicks, it was also their most successful one in 25 years. Ultimately the team was undone by injuries, but with everybody back and healthy, hopes are high that next season may turn out differently. A big question, however, is whether that “everybody” will include impending free agent OG Anunoby. There was a lot of fanfare around Anunoby’s acquisition from the Toronto Raptors in January, but nobody knew just how impactful this “3-and-D” guy would be. When the swingman played, the Knicks were a staggering 26-6 combined in the regular and postseason. While he didn’t always stuff a stat sheet, his hustle and intangibles often made a huge difference. Speculation has it that Anunoby could be looking for a new contract around $150 for four years. But, that may just be the opening gambit, as he might be seeking something much more lucrative, perhaps as high as $245 million for five years. Signing a player who has helped the team to win over 80% of their games when he plays is a no-brainer. The problem for the Knicks, however, is that they may not be fully confident that they can rely on Anunoby. He missed a significant amount of time during the regular season with an elbow injury and it was a hamstring issue which eventually knocked him out of the second-round series with the Pacers. If the Knicks do balk at Anunoby’s asking price or fail to offer him what he wants, there will be no shortage of suitors. Perhaps the leader in the clubhouse right now is the Philadelphia 76ers, who got an up-close look at exactly what Anunoby can do in the postseason. During their matchup in the first round of the playoffs, Anunoby proved to be quite troublesome for the Sixers. His 7-foot-2 wingspan wrecked havoc and when the Knicks got a stop, he always seemed to be in on the action. Should Philadelphia offer him a significant deal, the catalyst could be New York’s closeout game. In it, Anunoby scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds while logging two steals and two blocks. Plus, he did this to put an exclamation mark on the game and the series: So, would Anunoby leave the Knicks for one of their biggest rivals? A quiet player by nature, he so far hasn’t said anything to indicate where his intentions lie. But, as with most transactions, it will probably come down to money. There is a good chance that the Knicks will see the Sixers in the playoffs again next season, but right now it’s anybody’s guess which side Anunoby will be on.

This past season was a tough one for Flyers winger Cam Atkinson who found himself a healthy scratch on several occasions while underachieving offensively. Meanwhile, it was even worse for goaltender Cal Petersen who spent most of the season in the minors and struggled in his brief action with Philadelphia. On top of that, cap space is at a premium for the Flyers as CapFriendly projects them to have barely $500K in regular cap room this summer, which isn’t enough to try to make any sort of upgrade to their roster. Accordingly, GM Daniel Briere acknowledged to NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman that the team is considering all of its options when it comes to opening up cap space, including buying out the veterans. However, no decision has been made at this time. Atkinson is coming off the quietest full season of his career. The 35-year-old notched just 13 goals and 15 assists in 70 games while seeing his ice time drop to a little under 16 minutes a night. While he was a legitimate top-line threat earlier in his career, he has become a secondary scorer but one who carries a hefty price tag with a $5.875M AAV. That would be a difficult contract to move without incentivizing a team to take it on which makes the idea of a buyout more palatable. They’d save a little over $3.5M for 2024-25 if they went this route with Atkinson but would add a $1.76M dead cap charge to their books in 2025-26. As for Petersen, he was acquired in a salary dump from Los Angeles this summer. At one point, it looked like he could start as the backup and allow Samuel Ersson to spend more time in the minors but instead, the 29-year-old was waived and spent most of the year in Lehigh Valley. He didn’t have a particularly strong campaign there either, posting a 2.71 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage in 28 regular-season appearances. Meanwhile, in five games with the Flyers, Petersen notched a .864 SV% while allowing 18 goals in five games. A buyout for him would reduce his cap charge from $5M to just $1M for 2024-25 but add $2M onto the 2025-26 books. It’s worth noting that the Flyers have other cap room available to them as Ryan Ellis is set to remain on LTIR for next season, freeing up a potential $6.25M in extra flexibility. However, going deep into that would prevent them from banking any in-season cap room, so ideally, they’d like to try to avoid it. There’s also the uncertainty with Ryan Johansen’s situation. Briere indicated to Kimelman that there’s no clarity yet when it comes to the center: “He’s going through some kind of rehab. He had an injection; claims he has a hip injury. At this point, honestly I’m not too sure where it’s at. We’re not sure if he’s going to need surgery, or if he’s going to be ready for camp. We don’t really know at this point.” Johansen has one year left on his deal with the Flyers being responsible for a $4M cap charge. If he’s unavailable to play at all, he would then be LTIR-eligible, giving them more wiggle room if they opted to use that. However, some lingering uncertainty about Johansen’s health takes a buyout off the table as injured players can’t be bought out, making Petersen and Atkinson the potentially viable options on that front. The first buyout window will open up two days after the Stanley Cup ends and run through June 30, so while there is still time for Briere to make a decision on what to do with Atkinson and Petersen, he’ll have to move quickly once the window opens if they do indeed decide to part with one or both of them.

The Dallas Cowboys are expected to make some changes to the quarterback roster before the start of the regular season. The Cowboys could see a major switch-up as Trey Lance takes a leap this offseason and Dak Prescott’s situation with the front office continues to be at a standstill. Dak Prescott is having a good showing at OTAs The Cowboys have Prescott under contract for the 2024 season. After that, the Cowboys must either decide to pay him or let him walk away in free agency. Prescott isn’t leaving town without a fight. Per the Cowboys’ website, McCarthy said Prescott was having his best offseason: “I think Dak is having his best offseason program that we’ve had,” McCarthy said. “This atmosphere that we’ve practiced in with the quarterback and receivers has really hit the mark. I’ve been very impressed with the quality of work.” “With the quarterback, when the connection is there in the perimeter realm — and that’s been the majority of our physical activity — the connection is better,” McCarthy added. “The receivers are playing with more urgency, more reps. The timing is better. The real test will be when we get to training camp.” Is Trey Lance capable of being Prescott’s successor? However, the Cowboys need to consider the possibility that Prescott will not be with the team in 2025. They could look to the San Francisco 49ers’ former first-round pick, Trey Lance. The Cowboys traded for Lance during the preseason last year, and McCarthy said last week that he likes where Lance is headed in OTAs. “Young quarterback comes into a new system. So you got the learning curve, but now starting to get the timing with the routes,” McCarthy said. “[Trey Lance is] close to being a master of the system. He has a really high understanding. He’s communicating very well. He looks more and more comfortable. He just needs reps. I know I say that every time I talk about him. He just needs as many reps as he can.” The Cowboys could give Lance the QB2 job in the fall to see if he has the potential to be Prescott’s successor in 2025. That would leave Cooper Rush as the odd man out. Dallas Cowboys predicted to demote Cooper Rush K.D. Drummond with Cowboys Wire developed a 53-man roster projection before training camp. It has Lance being demoted to the practice squad for the upcoming season. Rush has spent years on the active roster as a backup for the Cowboys since they signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He briefly spent time on the New York Giants’ practice squad in 2020 before they released him in September of that season. Rush would sign with the Cowboys a few weeks later. Rush has been a valuable backup for the Cowboys, but he’s not the long-term solution at the starting position. Lance has a chance to be a starter. The Cowboys need to find Lance’s ceiling. Rush could help the Cowboys in 2024, just in a new role.

During a recent appearance on San Francisco’s KGMZ-FM radio station, former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who helps train Brandon Aiyuk in the offseason, shared the following about how the young pass catcher currently feels about the chances of signing a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers in the near future. “At one point, (Aiyuk) thought he may sign,” Houshmandzadeh said.
“That optimistic outlook has turned into a pessimistic outlook.” Aiyuk wanting a new deal has been one of the biggest storylines of the 2024 offseason for the 49ers, and based on Houshmandzadeh’s recent comments, it doesn’t sound like an agreement is going to be reached anytime soon.
Aiyuk is currently in the middle of the final year of his rookie contract with San Francisco, which is set to pay him a little more than $14.1M during the 2024 season, according to Spotrac.com.
But after finishing with more than 75 catches, 1,000 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in each of his last two years with the 49ers, the young playmaker wants a new contract that pays him closer to what some of the top wide receivers in the NFL are currently making.
This offseason, Nico Collins of the Houston Texans, Jaylen Waddle of the Miami Dolphins and Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions all signed new deals with their respective teams that will pay each wide receiver an average annual salary between $24M and $31M. Ideally, San Francisco would probably like a new contract for Aiyuk to land somewhere between that annual average.
But is that something the 26-year-old wide receiver is okay with, or is he looking to sign a deal that surpasses it? With the 49ers’ first game of the 2024 regular season set to take place on Sept. 9, they still have a good amount of time to attempt to negotiate a new contract with Aiyuk before returning to the field.
Will the receiver’s supposed pessimism about getting a deal done turn into optimism before then, or will these negotiations bleed into the upcoming season?

Cowboys predicted to demote veteran QB amid Trey Lance’s big spring
The Dallas Cowboys are expected to make some changes to the quarterback roster before the start of the regular season. The Cowboys could see a major switch-up as Trey Lance takes a leap this offseason and Dak Prescott’s situation with the front office continues to be at a standstill. Dak Prescott is having a good showing at OTAs The Cowboys have Prescott under contract for the 2024 season. After that, the Cowboys must either decide to pay him or let him walk away in free agency. Prescott isn’t leaving town without a fight. Per the Cowboys’ website, McCarthy said Prescott was having his best offseason: “I think Dak is having his best offseason program that we’ve had,” McCarthy said. “This atmosphere that we’ve practiced in with the quarterback and receivers has really hit the mark. I’ve been very impressed with the quality of work.” “With the quarterback, when the connection is there in the perimeter realm — and that’s been the majority of our physical activity — the connection is better,” McCarthy added. “The receivers are playing with more urgency, more reps. The timing is better. The real test will be when we get to training camp.” Is Trey Lance capable of being Prescott’s successor? However, the Cowboys need to consider the possibility that Prescott will not be with the team in 2025. They could look to the San Francisco 49ers’ former first-round pick, Trey Lance. The Cowboys traded for Lance during the preseason last year, and McCarthy said last week that he likes where Lance is headed in OTAs. “Young quarterback comes into a new system. So you got the learning curve, but now starting to get the timing with the routes,” McCarthy said. “[Trey Lance is] close to being a master of the system. He has a really high understanding. He’s communicating very well. He looks more and more comfortable. He just needs reps. I know I say that every time I talk about him. He just needs as many reps as he can.” The Cowboys could give Lance the QB2 job in the fall to see if he has the potential to be Prescott’s successor in 2025. That would leave Cooper Rush as the odd man out. Dallas Cowboys predicted to demote Cooper Rush K.D. Drummond with Cowboys Wire developed a 53-man roster projection before training camp. It has Lance being demoted to the practice squad for the upcoming season. Rush has spent years on the active roster as a backup for the Cowboys since they signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He briefly spent time on the New York Giants’ practice squad in 2020 before they released him in September of that season. Rush would sign with the Cowboys a few weeks later. Rush has been a valuable backup for the Cowboys, but he’s not the long-term solution at the starting position. Lance has a chance to be a starter. The Cowboys need to find Lance’s ceiling. Rush could help the Cowboys in 2024, just in a new role.

During a recent appearance on San Francisco’s KGMZ-FM radio station, former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who helps train Brandon Aiyuk in the offseason, shared the following about how the young pass catcher currently feels about the chances of signing a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers in the near future. “At one point, (Aiyuk) thought he may sign,” Houshmandzadeh said. “That optimistic outlook has turned into a pessimistic outlook.” Aiyuk wanting a new deal has been one of the biggest storylines of the 2024 offseason for the 49ers, and based on Houshmandzadeh’s recent comments, it doesn’t sound like an agreement is going to be reached anytime soon. Aiyuk is currently in the middle of the final year of his rookie contract with San Francisco, which is set to pay him a little more than $14.1M during the 2024 season, according to Spotrac.com. But after finishing with more than 75 catches, 1,000 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in each of his last two years with the 49ers, the young playmaker wants a new contract that pays him closer to what some of the top wide receivers in the NFL are currently making. This offseason, Nico Collins of the Houston Texans, Jaylen Waddle of the Miami Dolphins and Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions all signed new deals with their respective teams that will pay each wide receiver an average annual salary between $24M and $31M. Ideally, San Francisco would probably like a new contract for Aiyuk to land somewhere between that annual average. But is that something the 26-year-old wide receiver is okay with, or is he looking to sign a deal that surpasses it? With the 49ers’ first game of the 2024 regular season set to take place on Sept. 9, they still have a good amount of time to attempt to negotiate a new contract with Aiyuk before returning to the field. Will the receiver’s supposed pessimism about getting a deal done turn into optimism before then, or will these negotiations bleed into the upcoming season?
