St. Louis Blues fans are grappling with devastating news today: Torey Krug, the team’s top defenseman, will miss the entire 2024-2025 NHL season. This blow comes after Krug underwent surgery to address pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle. The surgery was a last-ditch effort, as non-surgical methods had failed to rehabilitate the injury. Krug’s absence leaves a significant gap in the Blues’ defensive core, impacting both their defensive strategy and power play, where Krug has been a crucial player since signing his seven-year, $45 million contract in 2020.

This injury comes at a critical time for the St. Louis Blues. The team narrowly missed the playoffs last season, falling just six points short. As they aim to return to contention this year, losing Krug is a serious setback. The veteran defenseman has been a stabilizing force on the team, and his injury will force the Blues to rely on younger, less experienced players to fill the void. Players like Matthew Kessel and Scott Perunovich are expected to step up, but they have big shoes to fill.

Krug’s injury also raises questions about his future in the NHL. At 33, he admitted the surgery has left his long-term playing prospects uncertain. His emotional response to the news underscores how much this setback means to him and the team. Despite his physical absence, Krug has vowed to stay close to the team, offering support and leadership from the sidelines.

The timing couldn’t be worse for the Blues. In addition to Krug’s injury, key forward Brandon Saad may miss the start of the season due to personal reasons. The Blues had already been facing depth concerns, and losing two critical players compounds those challenges. Although the team signed Philip Broberg and Ryan Suter as defensive reinforcements, Krug’s absence will test the entire roster from the start.

This news has hit the fanbase hard, as many were optimistic about the team’s chances of bouncing back this season. The Blues now face an uphill battle as they attempt to regroup and find a way to remain competitive in a challenging Central Division.
