Who Will Lead the Buckeyes’ Offense? Top Candidates to Replace Chip Kelly

As Ohio State prepares for the upcoming season, one of the most pressing questions facing the Buckeyes is who will step up to lead the offense after the departure of offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Kelly, who helped transform Ohio State’s offensive identity during his tenure, left a legacy of explosive play-calling, innovative schemes, and high-scoring games. The search for his successor is critical for the Buckeyes, as they aim to continue their offensive dominance in the competitive landscape of college football.

Ohio State’s offense is built on versatility, tempo, and power, and it’s clear that the next coordinator will need to keep this momentum going while also introducing their own unique style. With spring practices already underway, several top candidates have emerged as potential replacements for Kelly.

    1. Kevin Wilson (Offensive Analyst)

A familiar face in Columbus, Kevin Wilson has been with Ohio State as an offensive analyst since 2017 and has deep ties to the program. Wilson, a former head coach at Indiana, has extensive experience running dynamic offenses and has helped shape some of the best offenses in recent history. As the offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes, he would bring a strong emphasis on the running game and play-action, areas where Ohio State has thrived. Wilson’s experience and familiarity with the current roster make him a top contender for the role.

    2. Brian Hartline (Wide Receivers Coach)

The wide receivers coach for the Buckeyes, Brian Hartline, has built a reputation as one of the top recruiters and developer of talent at the position. With his strong connections to Ohio State’s recruiting efforts and his ability to develop elite wide receivers, Hartline is an intriguing option to take over the offensive coordinator role. While he is relatively young and unproven as a coordinator, his ability to connect with players and his knowledge of the Ohio State offense could give him a smooth transition into this new role.

    3. Mike Yurcich (Quarterbacks Coach)

Another prominent candidate is Mike Yurcich, Ohio State’s quarterbacks coach, who has experience as an offensive coordinator at multiple schools, including Oklahoma State and Texas. Yurcich’s offense is known for its up-tempo, pass-heavy attack that could complement the current offensive talent Ohio State has at the quarterback and wide receiver positions. Yurcich’s deep understanding of quarterback play and ability to adapt to different styles of offense make him a strong candidate to take the reins of the Buckeyes’ offense.

    4. Tony Alford (Running Backs Coach)

Tony Alford, Ohio State’s running backs coach, has been with the program since 2015 and has developed some of the best running backs in the nation. Though he’s traditionally focused on the running game, his understanding of offensive schemes and ability to mesh with the other coaches could give him an edge. Alford’s strong ties to the team and his ability to manage all aspects of the offense would make him a solid choice for a coordinator role.

As Ohio State evaluates its candidates, the key will be finding someone who can maintain the offensive balance that has become a hallmark of the program under Kelly. Whether it’s Wilson’s ground attack, Hartline’s air assault, Yurcich’s high-powered passing attack, or Alford’s dynamic play-calling, the next offensive coordinator will be tasked with keeping the Buckeyes in contention for national championships.

With spring practice underway, it’s clear that the future of Ohio State’s offense is in capable hands, and Buckeyes fans will be eagerly awaiting the announcement of who will take the reins.
