In a surprising development, Matt Rhule, head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, has officially announced his departure from the university to accept a head coaching position with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. This move marks Rhule’s return to the NFL after a previous tenure with the Carolina Panthers.
Rhule’s coaching career has been characterized by his ability to revitalize struggling programs. He first garnered attention at Temple University (2013–2016), where he led the Owls to consecutive 10-win seasons, a rare achievement for the program. He then took over at Baylor University (2017–2019), transforming the Bears from a 1–11 record to an 11–3 finish and a Sugar Bowl appearance in his final season.
In 2020, Rhule transitioned to the NFL as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Despite high expectations, his tenure was marked by challenges, culminating in an 11–27 record over two and a half seasons. Reflecting on his time with the Panthers, Rhule acknowledged the difficulties, stating, “I just don’t know if I was a fit there.”
Undeterred, Rhule returned to the collegiate ranks in 2023, accepting an eight-year, $74 million contract to become the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In his second season, he led Nebraska to its first bowl appearance in eight years, culminating in a victory at the Pinstripe Bowl.
His decision to depart Nebraska for the Cleveland Browns underscores his enduring appeal in the NFL. Known for his program-building expertise, Rhule’s appointment is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the Browns, who have been seeking stability and success in recent years.
