JUST IN: New Hoosiers coach Darian DeVries reportedly calls upon Indiana legend Christian Watford to step into the Director of….

In a significant move for Indiana University basketball, newly appointed head coach Darian DeVries has reportedly reached out to former Hoosiers star Christian Watford to join his staff as Director of Basketball Operations. This development underscores DeVries’ commitment to integrating the program’s storied past with its future ambitions.

DeVries, who was named head coach on March 18, 2025, brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles at West Virginia and Drake University. At Drake, he led the Bulldogs to multiple 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances, earning recognition for his program-building capabilities.

Christian Watford is best remembered by Hoosiers fans for his game-winning three-pointer against Kentucky in 2011, a moment that has since been immortalized as the “Wat Shot.” Since graduating, Watford has remained engaged with the basketball community, participating in events like The Basketball Tournament (TBT) alongside other former Indiana players.

The Director of Basketball Operations role is pivotal, encompassing responsibilities such as coordinating team travel, managing schedules, and serving as a liaison between the coaching staff and other departments. Watford’s deep understanding of Indiana’s basketball culture and his firsthand experience as a player position him well to bridge the gap between past and present, fostering a sense of continuity within the program.

While official confirmation from Indiana University is pending, the prospect of Watford joining DeVries’ staff has generated enthusiasm among fans and alumni. This potential appointment reflects a broader trend in college basketball, where programs are increasingly enlisting former players in administrative and coaching capacities to leverage their insights and connections to the school’s heritage.

As the Hoosiers embark on this new chapter under DeVries’ leadership, the inclusion of figures like Watford could play a crucial role in revitalizing the program and reconnecting with its rich history.
