In a move that has energized the South Carolina basketball community, Meechie Johnson Jr. has announced he will return to the Gamecocks for his final year of college basketball. After a season back at Ohio State, Johnson is set to don the Gamecock uniform once more, pending the approval of a mental health medical hardship waiver.
Johnson’s journey has been anything but conventional. Beginning his collegiate career at Ohio State, he transferred to South Carolina in 2022, where he averaged 12.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game over two seasons. In the 2023-24 season, he elevated his performance, leading the team with 14.1 points per game and earning Second-Team All-SEC honors.
In December 2024, Johnson returned to Ohio State but faced challenges, playing only 10 games before stepping away from the team in mid-December due to personal reasons. He has since expressed a desire to complete his collegiate career at South Carolina, where he found success and stability.
The 2025-26 season will mark Johnson’s sixth year in college basketball. If his hardship waiver is approved, he will bring invaluable experience and leadership to the Gamecocks, aiming to help the team rebound from a challenging 2024-25 season that saw them finish with a 12-20 record.
