Historic Gift: Cris Carter Donates $18.2M to Ryan Day for New Ohio State Stadium, Citing Lifelong Buckeye Pride and Commitment to Football Program’s Future

    Columbus, OH — April 21, 2025

In a moment that will be etched in Ohio State football history, former Buckeye legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter has pledged a staggering $18.2 million to head coach Ryan Day for the development of a new Ohio State football stadium. The landmark donation, the largest ever made by a former Ohio State athlete, underscores Carter’s enduring love for his alma mater and his vision for the future of the Buckeye football program.

“I owe everything to this university,” Carter said during an emotional press conference held at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. “Ohio State gave me the platform to become the man I am today, both on and off the field. This gift is my way of saying thank you—and making sure future generations of Buckeyes have even better opportunities.”

The donation will serve as a major cornerstone in the university’s ambitious plan to construct a state-of-the-art stadium that will replace the iconic—but aging—Ohio Stadium, affectionately known as “The Horseshoe.” While the historic Horseshoe will remain a part of the university landscape, the new venue aims to integrate cutting-edge technology, improved fan experiences, and enhanced facilities for players and staff.

Coach Ryan Day, visibly moved by Carter’s generosity, expressed deep gratitude for the donation and its potential to shape the program’s future. “This is more than just a financial gift—it’s a declaration of belief in what we’re building here. Cris has always represented the heart of Buckeye Nation, and his commitment today sends a powerful message to our players, fans, and recruits.”

Carter’s decision to contribute was not made lightly. The former wide receiver, who starred at Ohio State from 1984 to 1986, reflected on the personal and professional growth he experienced during his time in Columbus. Known for his precision on the field and resilience in life, Carter said the Buckeye culture helped mold him, and he wants to ensure that legacy continues.

“This is about pride, legacy, and lifting up the next generation of leaders,” Carter said. “I want these young men to know that when they put on that scarlet and gray, they’re not just playing a game—they’re stepping into a brotherhood that lasts a lifetime.”

The new stadium project is estimated to cost over $500 million and is expected to break ground in 2026. University officials have said that Carter’s donation has already sparked interest from other potential donors and alumni, further accelerating the fundraising campaign.

Gene Smith, Ohio State’s athletic director, called the gift “transformative,” noting that it marks a new era of engagement between former athletes and the program. “Cris has set a powerful example,” Smith said. “This is about more than bricks and mortar—it’s about belief, community, and the unbreakable spirit of the Buckeyes.”

With Carter’s $18.2 million donation now fueling the dream, Ohio State fans and alumni around the world have one more reason to rally behind a program steeped in tradition but always looking forward.

“Buckeye pride never fades,” Carter said with a smile. “It

    only grows stronger.”
