BREAKING NEWS: Texas Tech Head Coach Grant McCasland Donates Entire $1.8 Million Bonus and Endorsement Contract to Charities and Homelessness Support

In an extraordinary act of generosity, Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s basketball head coach Grant McCasland has donated the entirety of his $1.8 million bonus and endorsement contract earnings to charity. The funds will benefit several local and national organizations, with a focus on fighting homelessness and supporting underprivileged communities.

The announcement, made Tuesday morning, stunned the college basketball community and drew widespread praise from fans, players, and philanthropic leaders. McCasland, who recently led the Red Raiders to one of their most successful seasons in recent memory, said he felt a deep sense of responsibility to give back.

“Basketball has given me so much — a platform, a purpose, and a way to impact lives,” McCasland said in a press release. “But it’s what we do off the court that defines us. I want to be part of the solution for people who are struggling to meet basic needs like shelter and food. This is just one way I can try to make a difference.”

According to Texas Tech officials, the $1.8 million donation includes postseason performance bonuses as well as income from endorsement deals finalized earlier this year. The funds are being distributed among several nonprofits, including Lubbock Impact, the South Plains Homeless Consortium, Feeding Texas, and the national organization Covenant House, which focuses on youth homelessness.

Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt expressed admiration for McCasland’s leadership both on and off the court. “Grant’s commitment to excellence is matched only by his compassion,” Hocutt said. “This donation reflects his values and the kind of culture we want to build at Texas Tech — one of integrity, generosity, and community impact.”

Players and staff also echoed their support, with senior forward D’Maurian Williams calling it “inspiring” and “a reminder that success is about lifting others up.”

McCasland’s gesture comes at a time when homelessness in Texas continues to be a pressing issue. Recent data from the Texas Homeless Network shows a steady increase in housing insecurity across the state, exacerbated by inflation and housing shortages.

In addition to his financial contribution, McCasland plans to launch a new community outreach initiative next season that will involve his players in volunteer efforts and mentorship programs across Lubbock and the surrounding areas.

“It’s not about headlines — it’s about heart,” McCasland said. “If we can help even a few people feel seen, supported, and loved, then it’s all worth it.”
