JUST IN: Brett Baty Optioned to Triple-A Syracuse as Jeff McNeil Returns to Mets Roster, Transaction Wire Confirms—Move Provides Boost to Infield Depth as McNeil Rejoins Lineup for Upcoming Games Against Division Rivals

In a notable roster shuffle, the New York Mets have officially optioned third baseman Brett Baty to Triple-A Syracuse, clearing a roster spot for the return of veteran infielder and former All-Star Jeff McNeil. The move, confirmed Monday afternoon via the MLB transaction wire, signals both a strategic shift and a renewed focus on consistency as the Mets gear up for a crucial stretch of games against division rivals.

The demotion of Baty, once considered a cornerstone of the Mets’ youth movement, comes after a stretch of underwhelming performance at the plate. Though he showed flashes of potential, the 24-year-old has struggled to find his rhythm in the majors this season, posting a modest slash line and battling inconsistency both offensively and defensively.

“Brett’s a talented young player and part of our future, no doubt,” said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza in a post-game media availability. “Right now, it’s about getting him back on track, getting consistent reps, and giving him a chance to reset mentally and physically. This isn’t the end — it’s part of the process.”

Baty’s demotion makes way for the return of Jeff McNeil, who has been on the injured list but is now fully healthy and ready to rejoin the team. The 2022 National League batting champion brings much-needed veteran presence, versatility, and offensive spark to a Mets lineup that has struggled to produce consistently in recent weeks.

McNeil, known for his high-contact approach and defensive flexibility, can play second base, third base, and even corner outfield if needed. His return comes at a pivotal time, as the Mets prepare for a key stretch of games against NL East opponents — games that could make or break their early playoff positioning.

“Jeff’s return is a big boost for us,” Mendoza added. “He brings energy, leadership, and a level of professionalism that sets the tone for the clubhouse. We’re excited to have him back.”

The move also reflects the front office’s ongoing efforts to balance development with results. While the Mets remain committed to building through their young core, there’s a clear desire to compete now — especially given the significant financial investments made in recent seasons. By sending Baty down, the organization is hoping he can fine-tune his mechanics and rebuild confidence without the pressure of performing in the big leagues.

In Triple-A, Baty is expected to receive everyday playing time, work closely with the coaching staff on approach and adjustments, and continue developing into the high-impact player the Mets believe he can become.

The fan reaction has been mixed, with some expressing disappointment in Baty’s lack of progress, while others are optimistic about his long-term potential. Many, however, are excited to see McNeil back in action.

“I love Baty’s future, but we need wins now,” one fan tweeted. “McNeil brings that grit and consistency we’ve been missing.”

As the Mets try to regain momentum and climb the standings, every move counts — and the return of Jeff McNeil, combined with a developmental reset for Brett Baty, could prove to be a calculated step toward as  stronger second half.
