In an inspiring act of generosity, Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon has pledged $7.5 million to convert his private residence in Denver into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth. The announcement came early Thursday morning, sparking a wave of praise across the sports world and beyond.
MacKinnon, 29, known for his leadership on and off the ice, is partnering with several local nonprofits to launch the initiative. The shelter, set to open in late 2025, will provide emergency housing, mental health support, education resources, and job training for at-risk youth aged 16–24.
“This city has given me so much,” MacKinnon said in a heartfelt statement. “It’s time I give something meaningful back, especially to those who need it most. No young person should have to sleep on the streets.”
The property, formerly a luxurious 10-bedroom estate in the Cherry Creek neighborhood, will be fully renovated to accommodate up to 50 residents at a time. Plans include shared living spaces, classrooms, therapy rooms, and a recreational center.
Local leaders and community advocates have praised the move as a major step toward addressing Denver’s growing homelessness crisis. According to the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, the number of homeless youth in the city rose by 14% in 2024 alone.
“He’s setting a powerful example,” said Tamika Johnson, director of Youth Thrive Denver, one of the nonprofits involved in the project. “This isn’t just charity — it’s leadership. It shows how athletes can be true game changers off the field.”
Teammates and fans took to social media to express their admiration for MacKinnon’s bold move. Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog tweeted, “Proud to call you my teammate and friend. This is what real greatness looks like.”
While MacKinnon has long supported charitable causes, this marks his largest personal investment in a single project. The shelter will be named “MacKinnon House” and will be operated in collaboration with Denver Human Services.
Construction is expected to begin this summer. MacKinnon has vowed to stay closely involved throughout the process, even as the Avalanche continue their push toward another Stanley Cup run.
