BREAKING: Kliff Kingsbury Stuns the Football World with Game-Changing $15 Million Donation to Texas Tech Football Program

LUBBOCK, TX – In a stunning and heartfelt gesture that has rocked the college football world, former Texas Tech quarterback and NFL head coach Kliff Kingsbury has donated a record-breaking $15 million to the Texas Tech Red Raiders football program. The gift is one of the largest ever by a former college athlete to their alma mater and is being hailed as a game-changing moment for the university and its athletic future.

Kingsbury, known for his high-powered offenses both at Texas Tech and in the NFL, made the announcement Thursday during a surprise visit to the Texas Tech campus. Standing at midfield of Jones AT&T Stadium, flanked by current head coach Joey McGuire, members of the 2002–2003 Red Raiders team, and athletic director Kirby Hocutt, Kingsbury shared his emotional motivations for the historic donation.

“This university gave me everything,” Kingsbury said. “From the coaches who believed in me to the teammates who battled beside me, this is where I became the man and player I am today. I want to honor them, and more importantly, invest in the future of Red Raider football.”

The $15 million donation will be used to enhance the football program’s facilities, including a state-of-the-art performance center, upgraded locker rooms, and expanded sports science and recovery spaces. A portion of the gift will also fund scholarships and mentorship initiatives for student-athletes, with a special focus on honoring the contributions of past Red Raider players and coaches.

Kingsbury, a record-setting quarterback at Tech from 1999 to 2002, was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and is one of the most prolific passers in NCAA history. He later returned to Texas Tech as head coach from 2013 to 2018 before moving on to the NFL, most notably as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. He recently joined the Washington Commanders as offensive coordinator.

Reaction to the announcement has been swift and overwhelmingly positive.

“This is more than just a donation – it’s a legacy,” said McGuire. “Kliff’s gift ensures that Texas Tech remains a destination for top-tier talent and shows our players the importance of giving back and honoring where you came from.

Red Raiders fans flooded social media with praise and gratitude, celebrating Kingsbury not only as a football icon but as a devoted alum committed to lifting the program to new heights. Some former teammates, including NFL veterans Wes Welker and Daniel Loper, attended the ceremony and expressed their support.

“This is the Kliff we know – always thinking of others and pushing for greatness,” said Welker.

The university announced that, in recognition of the donation, the new athletic performance center will bear Kingsbury’s name. Construction is expected to begin in late 2025.

In a sport where headlines often focus on controversy and competition, Kliff Kingsbury’s $15 million gift is a reminder of the lasting bonds forged through college athletics – and the enduring power of gratitude.
