The two NBA icons have pledged an astounding $400 million to convert a historic downtown Phoenix estate into a state-of-the-art shelter for the homeless, underprivileged, and at-risk youth.
The ambitious project, dubbed “The Phoenix Rise Center,” will transform a once-luxurious but now-abandoned 50,000-square-foot mansion into a vibrant, multi-purpose community haven. Slated to open by late 2026, the center will provide not only beds and meals, but also long-term support systems like mental health counseling, job training, addiction recovery programs, and educational resources.
“This is more than a building – it’s a rebirth,” said Kevin Durant at Monday’s press conference. “Devin and I have both seen how homelessness and poverty can affect communities, especially young people. We wanted to do something lasting, something epic.”
The shelter will feature over 250 beds, classrooms, therapy centers, recreational areas, and on-site job placement offices. In addition, there will be a wing dedicated to families and single mothers, complete with daycare services and parenting support programs.
Devin Booker, a longtime community advocate in Arizona, called the initiative “a full-court press against hopelessness.” He added, “This isn’t charity – it’s empowerment. We’re giving people the tools to write new stories.”
The mansion, originally built in the 1920s and once owned by a copper mining tycoon, had stood vacant for over a decade. Mayor Kate Gallego praised the initiative, saying, “Durant and Booker are redefining what it means to be leaders in this city. This investment is not just financial – it’s emotional and deeply human.”
The project will be funded entirely by Durant and Booker through their respective charitable foundations, corporate partnerships, and private investment. The NBA and the Suns franchise have also expressed support, with plans to host fundraising events and awareness campaigns.
Beyond shelter, The Phoenix Rise Center aims to serve as a national model for athlete-driven community transformation. Several other athletes, including NFL players and Olympic medalists, have reportedly expressed interest in similar ventures after hearing about the project.
“Basketball brought us to Phoenix,” Durant concluded. “But love, community, and purpose are what will keep us here long after the buzzer sounds.”
Construction is expected to begin this fall, with volunteer sign-ups and staff recruitment launching in early 2026.
