FINALLY, HE’S BACK: Jarryd Hayne Returns as Parramatta Eels Fullback for 2025-26 NRL Season

Parramatta, NSW — In a move that has sent shockwaves through the rugby league world, Jarryd Hayne has officially returned to the Parramatta Eels as their starting fullback for the upcoming 2025-2026 NRL season. Earlier today, the club confirmed the two-time Dally M Medal winner’s comeback, marking one of the most dramatic returns in the sport’s history.

Hayne, 37, last played professional rugby league in 2018. Since then, he has faced a tumultuous period away from the game, including legal battles and time away from the public eye. However, with his legal issues now behind him and after extensive talks with the NRL Integrity Unit, Hayne has been cleared to return to the field. The announcement follows weeks of speculation and growing excitement among Parramatta fans, who have long considered Hayne a club legend.

Parramatta head coach Brad Arthur addressed the media in a press conference this morning. “This wasn’t a decision made lightly. Jarryd has trained hard, proven he still has the hunger, and most importantly, he’s earned this chance. He’s back in top shape and ready to go,” Arthur said.

The Eels have struggled to find consistency at fullback in recent seasons, and Hayne’s return could bring the spark they desperately need. While many questioned whether the aging star could still perform at an elite level, early training footage suggests he hasn’t lost the natural talent that once made him one of the NRL’s most electrifying players.

“I’m not here for a farewell tour,” Hayne said in a brief but emotional statement. “I’m here to compete, to win, and to give back to the fans who’ve supported me through everything. Parramatta is my home, and wearing this jersey again means everything.”

Hayne’s return has divided opinion across the NRL community. Some critics question whether he deserves another shot, while others believe everyone deserves a chance at redemption. Former teammates and opponents alike have voiced mixed reactions, but the Eels organization stands firm in its support.

“We’ve done our due diligence,” said Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos. “This isn’t just about football. This is about a man who wants to right some wrongs and contribute positively to the club and the game.”

Hayne is expected to start in the Eels’ first pre-season trial match in February 2025. Tickets for the opener at CommBank Stadium have already seen a surge in demand, with fans eager to witness the return of one of the club’s most iconic figures.

With the Eels eyeing a return to finals contention, all eyes will be on Hayne to see if he can recapture the magic that once made him the NRL’s most dominant player. Whether this comeback leads to triumph or disappointment, one thing is certain — Jarryd Hayne is back, and the league will be watching.
