Class of 2026 TE Mason Bonner Commits to Michigan: Wolverines Land a Rising Star

The University of Michigan has added a major piece to its 2026 recruiting class with the commitment of four-star tight end Mason Bonner. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound athletic standout from McKinney, Texas, announced his decision on Sunday, giving head coach Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines a dynamic weapon for the future.

Bonner’s commitment is another strong step forward for a Michigan program that has prioritized top-tier offensive talent under Moore’s leadership. Known for his elite size, athleticism, and versatility, Bonner chose Michigan over a competitive list of offers that included Texas, Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State.

    A Statement Commitment

Bonner’s announcement sent waves across the college football recruiting landscape. The Wolverines have recruited Texas with increasing confidence in recent cycles, and landing a top-tier talent like Bonner from the Lone Star State is a clear sign of the program’s growing national reach.

“I chose Michigan because of the culture, the coaching staff, and the way they develop tight ends,” Bonner said during his commitment announcement. “Coach Moore has a clear vision for where the program is headed, and I want to be part of that.”

That vision includes a dynamic offense where tight ends play a crucial role — something Bonner fits into perfectly. Whether lined up in-line, split out wide, or in motion, Bonner brings a level of versatility that makes him an offensive coordinator’s dream.

Scouting Report: Why Bonner Stands Out

Mason Bonner is ranked as one of the top tight ends in the 2026 class and for good reason. He’s a matchup nightmare for defenders. At 6-foot-5 and already over 230 pounds, he has the frame to block effectively while also being agile and fast enough to stretch the field in the passing game.

Analysts have compared him to former NFL tight end Jimmy Graham for his basketball-like body control and ability to high-point the football. His high school film is full of contested catches, red-zone touchdowns, and pancakes in run blocking.

“He’s the kind of tight end you can build an offense around,” said one national scout. “He has the athleticism of a wide receiver with the strength of a lineman. And he’s just scratching the surface.”

In his sophomore season at McKinney High School, Bonner caught 42 passes for 621 yards and 8 touchdowns. He also played a key role in the run game, helping the team average over 200 yards on the ground per contest. His multi-sport background — including basketball and track — shows in his fluid movement and explosive athleticism.

    Fit with Michigan’s Offense

The Wolverines have long valued tight ends, and under Sh
