ESPN has officially declared Arizona State Sun Devils legend Danny White as the greatest college football player of all time. White emerged victorious, surpassing three other legendary college football players……………ESPN Declares Arizona State Legend Danny White as Greatest College Football Player of All Time

May 31, 2025 — In a stunning and widely discussed announcement, ESPN has officially named Arizona State Sun Devils icon Danny White as the greatest college football player of all time. The decision came after a rigorous selection process involving fan votes, expert analysis, and a historical performance comparison against other legendary athletes.

White, a dominant quarterback during his tenure at Arizona State in the early 1970s, emerged victorious over three other all-time greats: Tim Tebow (Florida), Herschel Walker (Georgia), and Archie Griffin (Ohio State). The competition, part of ESPN’s month-long “Greatest of All Time” college football series, captivated fans and sparked lively debate across sports media and social platforms.

The final results were revealed in a nationally televised special Friday night, with White receiving 38% of the total fan vote, edging out Tim Tebow, who garnered 31%, followed by Walker at 20% and Griffin at 11%. ESPN analysts cited White’s record-breaking college career, leadership, and long-term impact on the game as deciding factors in the final tally.

“Danny White was ahead of his time,” said ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “He had the arm, the mobility, the vision—everything you want in a quarterback. He put Arizona State on the national map and redefined what it meant to play the position.”

During his career at Arizona State (1971–1973), White led the Sun Devils to a combined record of 32-4, including three Fiesta Bowl victories. He threw for over 6,700 yards and 64 touchdowns and was known for his clutch performances and cool demeanor under pressure. In his senior season, White finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting and was named a consensus All-American.

Beyond the numbers, White’s influence on the program and the Pac-10 conference (now Pac-12) was profound. He helped elevate ASU’s national profile, setting the stage for the school’s eventual inclusion in a major conference and building a tradition of elite quarterback play.

Though more popularly remembered for his successful NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, White has long been revered by Arizona State fans and college football historians for his collegiate accomplishments. Now, with this latest honor from ESPN, his legacy is solidified in the highest tier of college football greatness.

Speaking with ESPN following the announcement, an emotional White said, “I’m humbled. To be mentioned alongside guys like Tebow, Walker, and Griffin is incredible. But to be named the greatest? That’s something I never imagined. This is for my teammates, my coaches, and all the Sun Devil fans.”

The decision has already sparked intense debate, with some fans and commentators arguing that more recent players were overlooked. However, ESPN emphasized that the process included statistical performance, historical significance, and impact on the game, all areas where White excelled.

For Arizona State University and its alumni, the recognition is a moment of pride and validation. Danny White, long considered a legend in Tempe, now stands alone atop the college football mountain — the greatest of all time.
