BREAKING: At Vikings Training Camp, rookie QB J.J. McCarthy tries to squeeze a tough throw to star WR Justin Jefferson, but CB Byron Murphy Jr. breaks it up with a leaping tip, setting up an interception by LB Ivan Pace Jr. — a play that shows the defense’s growing energy and intensity at camp.

BREAKING: Defensive Firepower on Full Display as Vikings Rookie QB J.J. McCarthy’s Risky Throw Gets Snagged in Highlight Play at Camp

    Eagan, MN — June 3, 2025

Training camp is heating up in Minnesota — and so is the Vikings’ defense.

In what’s already being called one of the most electric plays of the day, rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy tested the limits of his arm and timing during a highly anticipated red zone drill. Attempting to squeeze a high-risk pass into a tight window for All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson, McCarthy’s throw instead became a highlight for the defense.

As Jefferson broke inside on a sharp post route, cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. read the rookie’s eyes, broke hard on the ball, and launched himself into the air for a well-timed tip. Just as impressive, linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. was trailing the play and alertly scooped up the tipped pass for a momentum-shifting interception — sending the defensive sideline into a frenzy.

The play served as a statement, not just about McCarthy’s ongoing adjustment to NFL speed and decision-making, but more importantly, about the Vikings’ rising defensive energy and execution under second-year defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

    Defensive Swagger Taking Shape

“The juice is real,” said head coach Kevin O’Connell after practice. “You can feel the edge these guys are bringing, and it’s contagious. That play — Murphy getting up and Pace finishing — that’s exactly what we want to see.”

Byron Murphy Jr., entering his second season with the Vikings after signing in 2023, has steadily grown into a vocal leader in the secondary. Today’s leaping tip highlighted his strong offseason focus on ball skills and anticipation.

“I just trusted my eyes,” Murphy told reporters post-practice. “J.J. has a big arm, and he’s confident. But in this league, windows close fast. I got a good break on the ball and Pace made a hell of a play to finish it.”

Pace, the undrafted linebacker sensation from 2023, continues to show he’s more than a one-season wonder. With sharp instincts and a nose for the ball, the young linebacker has been flying around the field during the first week of camp — and today’s interception only cements his growing reputation as a defensive playmaker.

    McCarthy Learning in Real Time

As for McCarthy, the rookie has had a mixed start to camp. The Michigan product has shown flashes of the arm strength and confidence that made him a top-10 pick, but he’s also learning the hard way that NFL defenders don’t need much space to make plays.

“I’ve got to be smarter with that throw,” McCarthy admitted. “Justin is an incredible target, and I’ll always believe in giving him a shot — but I’ve got to know when it’s just not there. Props to Murphy and Pace. That was a big-time defensive play.”

Despite the turnover, coaches continue to emphasize that mistakes like these are part of the growth process for a rookie quarterback. O’Connell reaffirmed his belief in McCarthy’s development and said reps like these are essential.

    Camp Intensity Ramping Up

With pads not yet fully on, the pace and intensity of this year’s camp have already stood out to both coaches and players. Today’s turnover was the third takeaway by the defense in as many days of open practice — a clear sign that the unit is playing fast, aggressive, and with a chip on its shoulder.

“It’s iron sharpening iron,” said safety Camryn Bynum. “We’ve got one of the best receivers in the world in Justin, and a young QB learning fast. Every time we step on the field, it’s about getting better — and that play showed who we are becoming as a defense.”

If early signs mean anything, the 2025 Vikings defense may be ready to set the tone — and steal the spotlight — while their rookie

    quarterback finds his NFL footing.
