The journey to the top of professional football is rarely straightforward, and few stories illustrate that better than that of Antoine Semenyo.
Today, the forward is widely recognised as one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking players, admired for his pace, power and ability to influence matches at the highest level. Yet there was a point during his teenage years when a professional football career seemed increasingly unlikely.
In a candid reflection on his early experiences in the game, Semenyo revealed how close he came to walking away from football altogether after an unsuccessful trial at Crystal Palace.
The forward admitted that rejection from the South London club proved to be a significant turning point in his life, leading him to question whether pursuing a career in the sport was worth the sacrifices he had already made.

Speaking about that difficult period, Semenyo said:
“I stopped playing football at 15 after my last trial at Crystal Palace, I didn’t get signed so I just wanted to be normal. I missed out on lots of parties before then”
The comments provide a fascinating insight into the challenges faced by young players hoping to break into the professional game.
For many aspiring footballers, academy football demands a level of commitment that often separates them from the experiences enjoyed by their friends. Weekends are spent travelling to matches, evenings are dedicated to training sessions and opportunities to enjoy a typical teenage social life can become increasingly limited.
Semenyo was no exception.
After failing to secure a place at Crystal Palace, he reached a stage where the disappointment became difficult to ignore. Having dedicated so much of his time to football without receiving the reward he had hoped for, the temptation to step away from the sport altogether became increasingly strong.
At just 15 years of age, he chose to stop playing and focus on living a more ordinary teenage life.
Looking back now, it is remarkable to consider how different his career might have been had that decision become permanent.
Fortunately for Semenyo, football eventually found its way back into his life. The determination and talent that had initially driven him towards the professional game remained, and he gradually worked his way back into the sport before beginning the climb that would eventually take him to the highest level.
His story serves as a reminder that rejection is often an unavoidable part of football’s development pathway. Countless young players are released or overlooked by clubs every year, yet those setbacks do not always define their futures.
For Crystal Palace supporters, Semenyo’s comments will undoubtedly spark discussion about what might have been. Few could have predicted that the teenager who left a trial disappointed would later develop into a player capable of thriving in the Premier League.
More importantly, however, his experience highlights the resilience required to succeed in professional football.
What once appeared to be the end of a dream ultimately became the beginning of a remarkable journey.
