Crystal Palace are stepping up efforts to secure the long-term future of Chris Richards, with the club keen to tie the defender down to a new contract before the start of next season.
The American international has become an increasingly important figure at Selhurst Park and played a significant role during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. Richards was a regular presence in the side that lifted the FA Cup, Community Shield and Europa Conference League, establishing himself as one of the most reliable members of the squad.

“We speak a lot about Crystal Palace keeping their best players,” Brown told Football Insider.
“But it’s just as important to keep the squad players who have played important roles but aren’t necessarily viewed as those top-line players in the side.
“There’s talk about [Adam] Wharton, [Jean-Philippe] Mateta and [Maxence] Lacroix, but Richards has played just as big a role in Palace’s success.
“They want to reward him with a new contract, and from what I hear, he’s happy at Palace so I expect he will be willing to extend his deal.
“Palace will be doing everything they can to keep players like Richards at the club, they definitely don’t want to lose him on a free, so I’m sure there will be movement after the World Cup.”
Richards is not the only player Palace are determined to keep hold of as they look to build on their recent achievements rather than dismantle the squad.
Following the departures of several influential figures in recent years, the club are keen to maintain stability and continue their upward trajectory. Retaining the core of the team is viewed as essential if Palace are to remain competitive domestically and in Europe.
Adam Wharton remains another key figure the club are desperate to keep despite attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Palace are understood to believe that European football, recent trophy success and the ambition shown by the club will help convince their leading players to remain.
Securing Richards on a new deal would represent another important step in that process as Palace look to protect the foundations of a squad that has delivered unprecedented success.
