Jean-Philippe Mateta has reflected on a pivotal moment in his career, admitting that a potential move to Italy once appeared to be on the cards before his fortunes eventually changed at Crystal Palace.
The French striker, who has become one of Palace’s most important players in recent seasons, revealed that interest from AC Milan emerged during a period when his future in south London was far from certain. However, the transfer never materialised and Mateta now looks back on the episode as little more than a passing chapter in his career.
“There was that chance to go to Milan, but that’s in the past now, and I don’t know what would have happened if I’d gone to Italy.”
At the time, Mateta was struggling to establish himself as a regular starter at Selhurst Park. Having initially joined Palace on loan before making the move permanent, the forward found opportunities difficult to come by under successive managers. Competition for places and inconsistent involvement left him unable to build momentum during his first seasons at the club.
His situation sparked speculation over a possible departure, with clubs across Europe monitoring his circumstances. Milan were among those linked with a move, but Palace ultimately retained the striker and the decision has since proved beneficial for both player and club.
Mateta’s fortunes changed dramatically once he was entrusted with a more prominent role in the first team. Increased playing time allowed him to find rhythm, improve his confidence and demonstrate the qualities that had persuaded Palace to bring him to the Premier League in the first place.

“I have to thank Crystal Palace. In my early years there, I didn’t perform consistently because I wasn’t getting much playing time. Whereas later on I played a lot more and that allowed me to develop and gain confidence,”
