Crystal Palace are considering a move for RC Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangaré as new head coach Pierre Sage looks to reunite with one of the key players from his spell in France.
According to Sky Sports, the Eagles have added Sangaré to their list of midfield targets following Sage’s appointment at Selhurst Park earlier this month. The pair worked together at Lens last season, where the 23-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign.
Sangaré only arrived at Lens last summer but quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers. The Mali international played a central role as Lens secured a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and lifted the Coupe de France for the first time in their history.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Premier League clubs keeping a close eye on his situation ahead of the summer transfer window.
Foot Mercato reported earlier this month that Manchester United are among the clubs showing serious interest in the midfielder and are preparing a bid. Lens, however, are understood to value Sangaré at around €40 million and are under no pressure to sanction a sale.
Palace’s interest comes as Sage begins to shape his squad for the new Premier League campaign. Having worked closely with Sangaré during their successful season together at Lens, the Frenchman is well aware of the midfielder’s qualities and believes he could make the step up to English football.
The existing relationship between player and manager could prove significant if Palace decide to formalise their interest, although any move is likely to depend on whether the South London club are prepared to meet Lens’ valuation.
Sangaré has developed into one of the most highly rated young midfielders in Ligue 1 thanks to his composure in possession, athleticism and ability to cover ground. His displays last season have put him firmly on the radar of clubs looking to strengthen their midfield this summer.
With Manchester United also credited with an interest, Palace could face strong competition should they press ahead with a move. Lens are aware of the growing demand for the Mali international and are expected to hold firm over their asking price unless a suitable offer is received.
The Eagles are also exploring reinforcements in other areas of the squad. Sky Sports reports that Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell is another player under consideration as Palace continue to assess options ahead of the new season.
Recruitment is expected to accelerate over the coming weeks as Sage looks to stamp his authority on the squad, and a reunion with Sangaré remains one of the possibilities being explored.
Whether Palace make a formal approach remains to be seen, but Sangaré’s name is firmly in the frame as the club continue their summer recruitment plans under their new head coach.
