Crystal Palace have stepped up their interest in Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell as preparations continue for the expected departure of Maxence Lacroix to Chelsea.
The Eagles are understood to have made the 23-year-old one of their leading defensive targets, with the club determined to have a replacement in place before Lacroix’s anticipated move to Stamford Bridge is completed.
Cresswell has enjoyed an impressive rise since leaving Leeds United for Toulouse in 2024. Regular football in Ligue 1 has helped him establish himself as one of the division’s most reliable central defenders, attracting interest from several clubs across Europe after an excellent campaign in France.
Palace, however, are believed to be leading the race.
As discussions continue over Lacroix’s proposed move to Chelsea, the Blues have explored the possibility of including defensive players in the negotiations to lower the overall transfer fee.
Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah have all been discussed as potential options during talks between the clubs.
Despite those names being mentioned, Palace are understood to have decided against pursuing any of the Chelsea defenders. Instead, their recruitment focus remains firmly on Cresswell, who is viewed as the ideal long-term successor to Lacroix.
The England Under-21 international is highly regarded by Palace’s recruitment department, with his age, experience and development in France making him an attractive option for the club’s long-term plans.
New manager Pierre Sage has also played a significant role in the pursuit.
Having spent several years coaching in Ligue 1, Sage has followed Cresswell’s progress closely during the defender’s time at Toulouse and is believed to be a strong admirer of his performances.
The Palace head coach is said to have personally approved the move, with the club hoping Cresswell can become the first signing of Sage’s reign at Selhurst Park.
The former Leeds academy graduate has rebuilt his career impressively since making the move to France. After finding first-team opportunities limited in England, Cresswell has developed into one of Ligue 1’s standout young defenders through consistent performances and regular starts.
His progress has not gone unnoticed.
Leeds United are understood to have continued monitoring their former academy product and have considered a move to bring him back to Elland Road.
Newly promoted Coventry City have also made enquiries as they look to strengthen their defence ahead of the new Premier League season.
However, Palace remain at the front of the queue.
The south London club believe Cresswell is capable of making an immediate impact while also offering significant room for further development over the coming years.
With Lacroix edging closer to Chelsea, Palace are keen to avoid any delay in strengthening their defence. Although Chelsea have suggested several players as part of negotiations, the Eagles’ attention remains fixed on Cresswell.
The coming weeks are expected to be decisive, but Palace are currently making the strongest push to bring the England Under-21 defender back to the Premier League.
