Present it as a strange event. The Eagles waived offensive lineman Bernard Williams. Names cross NFL leadership daily. So what was so unusual about it? Williams is 51 years old and last played for the Eagles on Christmas Eve 1994. In fact, he hasn’t played in the NFL since. He and the league have been at odds since Williams tested positive for marijuana in 1995. He then tested positive during a suspension that cost him the season. This was when a positive for pot could ruin your career. And Williams could be pretty good in the league. The former Georgia star was selected by the Eagles with the 14th pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. He started every game his rookie year. So he was an obvious choice for the new teams. But his career stalled for decades. He was basically treading water in the NFL’s version of the Bermuda Triangle. He never requested reactivation, and the Eagles apparently never filed the paperwork to release him. He finished his football career in the Canadian Football League and the XFL and Arena League. His final season was in 2004 with the Toronto Argonauts. Eagles’ Bernard Williams cuts him at 51: I had no idea I was still on the roster. But his name over the commercial success of the NFL left some scratching their heads. Williams said he believes it’s because he just asked for some NFL compensation. He told an InsideTheBirds.com reporter that a former player he coached in high school called to inform him of his release. The former player is now a Packers scout. “I had an idea, but they never released me,” Williams said. “And I always wondered what happened to it. When I went to Canada, the Eagles held my rights the whole time. They never waived my rights. But I had no idea I was still on the list 29 years later. An Eagles representative told NBC Sports Philadelphia that the team was recently contacted by the league. Apparently, the NFL went through some old rosters and found Williams’ name. All the while, Williams was, at least technically, still with the Eagles. And Williams could be pretty good in the league. The Eagles added two first-rounders from Georgia in April: Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith. And Williams said he’s still a big fan of both the Eagles and the Bulldogs. “People ask me all the time, ‘Who’s your team?’ I’ll always be an Eagles guy because the Eagles drafted me.” Williams said. “I’ve only been to one game since I left there. I came to see my nephew play for the Chiefs…they played the Eagles when Mike Vick was there. That was the last Eagles game I went to. You know, you’ve got to have a lot of Georgia guys on the team… Nakobe, [Jordan] Davis, you’ve got Nolan Smith on the team. So I’m a [Bulldog] fan and an Eagles fan. I’m definitely happy with both of their situations right now.”
