PITTSBURGH, PA — A day after one of the most disappointing losses in recent Steelers seasons came more bad news on Monday. Quarterback Kenny Pickett underwent surgery for a high ankle sprain and likely will be lost to the team for several weeks.

Coach Mike Tomlin made that announcement at his weekly press conference on Monday.

Pickett had the ankle “surgically repaired this morning in an effort to accelerate the healing process. Don’t have a lot of information on the status of that yet,” Tomlin said.

Pickett was injured late in the first half of the Steelers’ disappointing 24-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals Sunday at Acrisure Stadium. The Cardinals entered the game with a 2-10 record, one of the worst in the NFL. The injury occurred when Arizona defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter fell on Pickett’s legs while tackling him short of the goal line.

Tomlin did not say how many weeks Pickett will miss, but did say the injury is not season-ending.
