Phil Parkinson’s men enjoyed a historic 2022-23 season, clinching automatic promotion from the fifth tier with a best ever 111 points haul.
That amount set new benchmark in the National League, easily breaking the previous record of 105 points set by Crawley Town in the 2010-11 campaign.
It was a record-breaking season by the Reds but Chesterfield were on target to set a new highest ever tally after setting an alarming pace at the top of the table.
Whereas Wrexham were pushed all the way by Notts County in the race for the title, the Spireites are the runaway leaders and only needed a point at Halifax on Tuesday to secure promotion back to the Football League.
However, Chesterfield were forced to keep the champagne on ice as they were thrashed 4-2 by the Shaymen.
With six games remaining, it is only a matter of time before Paul Cook’s front-runners wrap up the title but they won’t be doing it with a new points record in the bag.
Chesterfield have 92 points and even if they win their final six games, will still only end on 110 – one short of Wrexham’s amazing feat last term.
The Reds are challenging for a second successive promotion and are currently third in League Two with eight fixtures left.
