AFL Round-Up: Collingwood and Brisbane Take Giant Leaps, But Concerns Loom for Key Players

AFL fans were treated to an action-packed weekend as Collingwood and Brisbane took significant strides in their quest for the 2024 premiership, but concerns over key injuries and inconsistent performances have raised questions about their long-term prospects.

Collingwood, under the leadership of head coach Craig McRae, continued their dominant run with a thrilling victory over a tough opponent. The Magpies, who have shown great depth and flair this season, overcame a fierce challenge in a high-intensity match that ended in a nail-biting finish. Collingwood’s win saw them take another important step toward securing a spot in the top four, with their fast-paced game and aggressive play making them one of the competition’s most dangerous sides. The win was bolstered by standout performances from key players, with the return of their star player following injury providing the added spark needed for the victory.

However, while McRae’s side has been impressing many with their cohesion and resilience, concerns over the fitness of several players have begun to surface. Key forward Jordan De Goey, who has been in sparkling form this season, limped off the field late in the game after a knock to the ankle. Initial reports suggest that it may not be a serious injury, but De Goey’s fitness will be closely monitored ahead of Collingwood’s upcoming matches. The potential loss of the dynamic forward could be a blow to the Magpies’ attacking setup if the injury proves to be more severe than first thought.

Brisbane also enjoyed a massive win over the weekend, continuing their charge toward the top of the ladder with an impressive performance. The Lions’ 10-goal triumph against a high-ranking rival showcased their dominance, particularly in the second half, where they ran away with the game after a tightly contested first half. Brisbane’s midfield, led by the ever-consistent Lachie Neale, was at its best, controlling the tempo and dictating play. The Lions’ powerful forward line, spearheaded by Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood, was also in full flight, creating scoring opportunities from all areas of the ground.

But as with Collingwood, injury concerns have cast a shadow over Brisbane’s strong performance. Star defender Harris Andrews suffered a suspected hamstring strain during the match, and while the injury appeared to be minor, it raises concerns over his availability for future matches. The Lions will be hoping for a quick recovery, as Andrews has been pivotal to their defensive structure.

Both Collingwood and Brisbane are showing championship-caliber form, but with injuries starting to mount, their depth will be tested in the weeks ahead. Fans of both teams will be watching closely as their sides continue their journeys towards the 2024 finals, hoping for a clean bill of health as the pressure builds toward the business end of the season.
