Jupiter, Florida — A sizable group of St. Louis Cardinals staff members gathered behind the batting cages in the middle of Roger Dean Stadium’s back fields on Tuesday morning, anxious to get a glimpse of the bullpens.
Sonny Gray stood atop the mound. Willson Contreras was crouching at the plate. The two were getting ready for their first bullpen session of the 2024 season—and their first together as battery mates—a day before camp officially began.
Gray was quick to establish the mood. Following a few warm-up pitches, the newly acquired Cardinals ace planted his foot in the ground, yelled at Contreras to “back that thing up” behind the plate, and began shouting out scenarios, then his intentions.
