Who will be the No. 1 pick in 2024 NBA Draft? Early projections say a Kentucky player. The 2023-24 men’s basketball season is still about three months away from its first game, but the hype around the incoming Kentucky freshmen is already extendin beyond Lexington, looking ahead to their not-too-distant professional futures. We’ve gone back and forth here a few times at RBR as to when the Dynasty ended, if it ever did, and indeed, whether there were two separate phases to it. But at the end of the day, the discussion always seemed academic. Because even as we acknowledged the ongoing greatness that we were witnessing, we always knew this coming season would more or less be the same: Be atop the division, compete for the SEC title, be in the playoff discussion, perhaps compete for a national title. Pencil in 10-11 regular season wins, save your money for the very real prospect…

A photo of Dick Butkus sneering behind his facemask filled the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 1970 NFL preview, topped by the headline, “The Most Feared Man in the Game.” Opponents who wound up on the business end of his bone-rattling hits could testify that wasn’t an exaggeration. Butkus, a middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears whose speed and ferocity set the standards for the position in the modern era, died Thursday, the team announced. He was 80. According to a statement released by the team, Butkus’ family confirmed that he died in his sleep at his home in Malibu, California.…

The Portland Trail Blazers take on the New York Knicks on Thursday night, and they could be down some serious firepower. The Blazers announced that forward Jerami Grant will miss his second consecutive game with a hamstring strain. That’s bad enough for a Portland team that needs offense, but also team leading scorer Anfernee Simons is questionable with left knee tendinitis. On the season, Simons is averaging 23 points per game for the Blazers this season. Should Simons miss Thursday’s game against the Knicks, that would mean that the Blazers will be missing 44 points per game of production between he and Grant. That would also likely mean…
I can’t even blame Mearns for adding to my streak of untelevised spring games, given that I had to swap with a fellow staff member to make my schedule fit this week. There wasn’t much to see from Lakeland anyway, as the Tigers ran all over the Yankees in a 7-0 exhibition loss. Marcus Stroman’s first three batters? Single, double play, groundout. He’s been tabbed to start the third game of the 2024 regular season, as well as the home opener on April 5th against Toronto, and kicking off those outings in the same way would get him over with the Yankee…
