Big Decision Awaits Duke Basketball Freshman Isaiah Evans

Duke basketball freshman Isaiah Evans faces a pivotal moment in his young career as he weighs his next move following his debut season in Durham. The former five-star recruit arrived at Duke with sky-high expectations, and now, after a season of growth, learning, and flashes of brilliance, Evans must decide whether to return to the Blue Devils, enter the NBA Draft, or explore the transfer portal.

At 6-foot-6, Evans entered college as one of the top-ranked players in the 2024 recruiting class. A long, athletic wing with natural scoring ability and a smooth shooting stroke, he brought excitement and buzz to Cameron Indoor Stadium from the moment he committed. Though his freshman season was marked by ups and downs—something not uncommon for a young player adjusting to the college game—he still showed the kind of potential that had scouts and coaches excited about his long-term upside.

Throughout the 2024–25 season, Evans averaged modest stats but made his presence known in key moments. He flashed his offensive versatility, knocking down three-pointers, slashing to the rim, and showing glimpses of becoming a reliable two-way player. His performance in several ACC matchups demonstrated his fearlessness and ability to rise to the occasion, even in limited minutes. Still, with Duke boasting a deep and experienced roster, playing time didn’t always come consistently, and Evans had to learn how to make an impact in a supporting role.

Now, with the season behind him, Evans is taking time to consider his next move. He has three main options: return to Duke for a sophomore campaign, enter his name into the 2025 NBA Draft, or explore a potential transfer to another program where he could assume a more prominent role. Each path comes with its own set of pros and cons.

Returning to Duke could provide Evans with a valuable opportunity to refine his skills, earn a larger role, and boost his draft stock. Head coach Jon Scheyer has expressed belief in Evans’ long-term potential and has indicated that he sees Evans as a key part of Duke’s future. Another year under Scheyer’s tutelage could help Evans improve his defense, playmaking, and consistency—key areas that NBA scouts want to see development in.

On the other hand, Evans’ name has already surfaced in draft conversations, with some analysts projecting him as a possible second-round pick based on potential alone. Declaring for the draft would mean betting on his upside, athleticism, and long-term growth in a professional development setting. However, that route comes with risk, especially if teams feel he needs more seasoning.

The third option, transferring, has also become more common in the modern college basketball landscape. If Evans believes he can thrive in a different system or wants a change of scenery to showcase his game more fully, the portal could offer a fresh start. Programs across the country would no doubt be eager to add a player of his talent.

As Evans and his camp consider their options, Duke fans wait anxiously. His decision will not only impact his own future but also shape the direction of Duke’s 2025–26 roster. No matter what he chooses, Isaiah Evans has the tools to be a star. Now, the spotlight is on him to decide where that next chapter begins.
