Boston Celtics CHAMPION AL HORFORD ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT AT THE AGE OF 39!……….June 18, 2025 — Boston, MA — Boston Celtics veteran and five-time NBA All-Star Al Horford has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball at the age of 39. The announcement comes just days after the Celtics captured their 18th NBA championship, adding a storybook ending to Horford’s illustrious 17-year NBA career.

In an emotional press conference at TD Garden this morning, Horford addressed a room filled with reporters, teammates, and coaches. “This is the right time,” he said, holding back tears. “To go out as a champion with this group, with this city, it means everything to me. I’ve given the game everything I have, and now it’s time to begin the next chapter.”

Horford, who was drafted third overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2007, leaves the game as one of the most respected and consistent big men of his generation. Known for his leadership, defensive prowess, and high basketball IQ, Horford spent time with the Hawks, Celtics (in two stints), 76ers, and Thunder during his career. But it was his final run with Boston that cemented his legacy as a Celtic legend.

After years of falling short in the postseason, Horford finally tasted championship glory this year as the Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks in five games. In the series, Horford played a critical role off the bench, providing veteran poise, defense, and timely shooting. His presence in the locker room was repeatedly praised by teammates Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, who credited Horford for helping guide the team through adversity.

“Al is the ultimate teammate,” said Tatum. “He’s like a big brother to all of us. This championship is as much his as anyone’s.”

Horford finishes his career with over 1,200 regular-season games, averaging 13.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. He was selected to five All-Star games and was twice named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. Beyond the stats, Horford was known as a model professional — a steady leader whose work ethic and humility were admired league-wide.

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Horford also had a profound impact on the international game. He remains one of the most accomplished Dominican players in basketball history and was a key figure in raising the profile of the sport in his home country.

Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens also spoke at the press conference. “Al Horford is everything you want in a player, a teammate, and a person. His impact on this franchise will be felt for generations.”

As for what comes next, Horford said he plans to spend more time with his family and explore opportunities in broadcasting and community work, particularly in youth development programs both in Boston and the Dominican Republic.

“I’ve had an incredible journey,” Horford said with a smile. “Basketball gave me everything. Now it’s time to give back.”

With his retirement, Horford leaves behind a legacy defined by class, resilience, and championship glory. The Celtics — and the game of basketball — will miss him dearly.
