BREAKING NEWS: A New Era Dawns at Gainbridge Fieldhouse as Tamika Catchings Returns to the Indiana Fever as Senior Coaching Staff………….

    Indianapolis, IN – July 5, 2025

In a stunning and heartwarming announcement that has electrified the basketball world, former Indiana Fever superstar and WNBA legend Tamika Catchings is officially returning to her roots. Gainbridge Fieldhouse erupted with emotion this morning as the Indiana Fever announced that Catchings will be joining the senior coaching staff effective immediately.

This marks a powerful full-circle moment for the franchise, the city of Indianapolis, and for Catchings herself, whose name is synonymous with passion, perseverance, and championship pedigree.

    A Legend Comes Home

Catchings is no stranger to the Fieldhouse or the Fever faithful. Drafted third overall by Indiana in the 2001 WNBA Draft, she became the face of the franchise over her 15-year playing career. Her accolades include 10 WNBA All-Star appearances, 5 Defensive Player of the Year awards, and the 2011 WNBA MVP. Most notably, she led the Fever to their first and only WNBA Championship in 2012, etching her name permanently into league history.

After retiring in 2016, Catchings remained active in the sport, taking on executive and ambassadorial roles, including serving as the Fever’s Vice President of Basketball Operations from 2019 to 2022. Now, in a move many fans hoped for but few expected, she returns to the sidelines, this time as a senior member of the coaching staff.

    The Announcement

The Fever made the announcement early Friday morning with a surprise press conference held at center court. Head Coach Christie Sides, flanked by team executives and current players, introduced Catchings to thunderous applause.

“Tamika represents everything we strive for as a team — resilience, integrity, and leadership,” said Sides. “Having her voice on our bench is not just a boost to our basketball IQ, it’s a cultural cornerstone being placed back into our foundation.”

Catchings, clearly emotional, addressed the packed arena with gratitude and resolve.

“This team is my family. Indianapolis is my home,” she said. “I’ve always said my journey was never just about basketball — it’s about empowering the next generation. Coaching gives me the chance to pour into our players every single day.”

    A Symbol of Renewal

Catchings’ return could not come at a more pivotal time. The Fever, led by recent top draft picks including Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, are entering a transformative phase with championship aspirations in sight. While raw talent fills the roster, Catchings’ presence promises to elevate the team’s maturity, defensive tenacity, and competitive mindset.

“Tamika brings wisdom you can’t teach,” said Clark, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick. “Her experience and fire — it’s contagious. We’re ready to learn from a legend.”

Off the court, Catchings continues to be a force in the community. Through her Catch the Stars Foundation, she’s empowered thousands of youth in education, fitness, and character development. Her return to the Fever underscores a deeper commitment to making basketball not just a game, but a platform for impact.

    Looking Ahead

As the Fever gear up for the second half of the 2025 WNBA season, all eyes will be on the sidelines where No. 24 — now in coaching gear — will be calling plays, giving guidance, and inspiring a new generation.

The return of Tamika Catchings isn’t just a homecoming. It’s a rebirth. A new era for the Indiana Fever begins now, and it’s burning with the same passion and purpose that once carried them to the mountaintop.

    Welcome home, Tamika.
