Breaking News: Brent Venables Announces Shocking Retirement from Oklahoma Football, Addresses Fans and Entire Program

In a stunning development just confirmed moments ago, Oklahoma football head coach Brent Venables has officially announced his retirement, sending shockwaves through the Sooner Nation and the college football world at large.

Venables, who took over the reins of the storied Oklahoma program in 2021, made the announcement in an emotional press conference held at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Flanked by his family, university president Joseph Harroz Jr., and athletic director Joe Castiglione, Venables addressed a room full of players, staff, and media — his voice trembling with emotion.

“This is, without a doubt, the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make,” Venables said. “But after deep reflection, conversations with my family, and time spent in prayer, I’ve decided to step away from coaching and retire from the game that has given me so much.”

The announcement comes as a complete surprise to many. While rumors of coaching changes often swirl in the offseason, there had been no public indication that Venables was considering stepping down. Just days ago, he was seen actively involved in spring practices, evaluating talent and preparing for the 2025 season.

Though the Sooners have seen ups and downs under his tenure, Venables was credited with restoring a hard-nosed defensive identity and rebuilding the culture following Lincoln Riley’s departure to USC. Oklahoma went 10–3 in the 2024 season, finishing with a Sugar Bowl appearance and a top-10 recruiting class — including the recent flip of five-star quarterback Malik Anderson, who had committed just this past week.

In his retirement speech, Venables thanked the players, staff, fans, and most notably, his wife and children for their unwavering support.

“Coaching at Oklahoma has been the honor of my life,” he said. “But I also realized that football has consumed nearly every waking moment for decades. I want to be more present for my family, and it’s time to start that chapter.”

The university has not yet named an interim head coach, but sources indicate that a national search will begin immediately. With Oklahoma preparing for its full transition into the SEC, the leadership decision is critical for the future of the program.

Athletic Director Joe Castiglione praised Venables for his leadership and character.

“Brent has poured everything he had into this program — heart, soul, and sweat,” Castiglione said. “His legacy here goes beyond wins and losses. He’s shaped young men, brought integrity to every room, and laid a strong foundation for what’s next.”

Players took to social media moments after the announcement, expressing shock, support, and gratitude for their coach. Star linebacker Jayden Reed tweeted: “Coach V changed my life. Forever grateful. Wishing him peace and happiness in this next chapter.”

As the college football world digests this stunning announcement, questions immediately arise: Who will replace Venables? Will recruits stay committed? And how will the Sooners adjust just months before their official entrance into SEC play?

One thing is certain — the Brent Venables era at Oklahoma, though relatively short-lived, left an indelible mark on one of the most iconic programs in college football. And for many in Norman, it won’t be soon forgotten
