In a remarkable act of compassion and community leadership, Edmonton Oilers star forward Leon Draisaitl has pledged $3.3 million of his personal wealth to convert a historic downtown property into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The NHL standout, known for his on-ice dominance, is now making headlines for his commitment off the rink. The 29-year-old German-born player announced earlier today that he has purchased a large three-story house near Jasper Avenue and will be working with local organizations to transform it into a safe haven for vulnerable youth.
The project, titled The Draisaitl House, will provide emergency housing, mental health support, career counselling, and recreational facilities for up to 40 youth at a time. Draisaitl cited the alarming increase in youth homelessness in Edmonton as the driving force behind his decision.
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate in my life and career,” Draisaitl said at a press conference outside the property. “When I walk around downtown and see young people sleeping on benches or in alleys, I can’t ignore it. I want this place to be more than a roof—it should be a turning point in someone’s life.”
Homelessness among youth in Edmonton has spiked in recent years, with local advocacy groups estimating that over 1,100 young people are currently without stable housing. Many face challenges such as mental illness, substance abuse, or having aged out of the foster care system.
Draisaitl’s initiative is being praised by city officials and community leaders. Mayor Amarjeet Sohi called the donation “an extraordinary act of civic responsibility,” adding that Draisaitl is setting “a powerful example for others in the sports and business communities.”
Construction on the shelter is expected to begin this summer, with doors projected to open by early 2026. Draisaitl is working closely with Homeward Trust and Youth Empowerment & Support Services (YESS) to ensure the shelter meets the needs of its future residents.
The announcement comes just as the Oilers are making a deep playoff run, and Draisaitl has made it clear that his commitment to the city extends far beyond the arena.
“This is my home,” he said. “And home should be a place where everyone feels safe.”
