The decision, announced Friday morning by Pacers Sports & Entertainment, marks the first time in franchise history that a former player will lead the organization from the front office in an executive capacity. Miller, 59, will assume full operational and strategic control of the team, overseeing basketball operations, business development, community engagement, and franchise growth.
“I’m honored, humbled, and beyond excited to return to the place I’ve always called home,” Miller said during the press conference at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. “This team, this city, and these fans gave me everything. Now, it’s my turn to give back in a different way—with a vision for building the next great era of Pacers basketball.”
Miller spent his entire 18-year NBA career with the Pacers and remains the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. Known for his clutch performances, sharp shooting, and fierce loyalty to Indiana, Miller became a fan icon in the 1990s and early 2000s. Since retiring in 2005, he has worked as a prominent NBA analyst for TNT and CBS Sports, building a reputation as a thoughtful and knowledgeable voice of the game.
Pacers owner Herb Simon called the appointment a “transformational moment” for the organization. “Reggie’s passion, intelligence, and deep understanding of the game are second to none. He brings not only championship aspirations but also a commitment to community and innovation,” Simon said.
Miller’s return comes at a time when the Pacers are poised for a resurgence. With a young core led by Tyrese Haliburton, Bennedict Mathurin, and rising star Jarace Walker, the team recently made a deep playoff run that energized the fanbase. Miller emphasized that his top priorities will be building a championship-caliber roster, enhancing player development, and deepening ties with local communities across Indiana.
“This is about more than basketball,” Miller said. “We want to inspire, empower, and elevate our city and our state. Every kid with a hoop in their driveway should believe they can be a Pacer one day.”
Reactions from around the league have been overwhelmingly positive. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised the move as “a bold and inspiring choice that reflects the evolving role of player leadership in the league.” Former teammates, including Chris Mullin and Jalen Rose, expressed joy and support on social media.
Though he has no prior executive experience, Miller’s leadership qualities, insider knowledge, and strong relationships within the league are expected to ease the transition. He will immediately begin working with President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard on roster and draft planning for the 2025–26 season.
Reggie Miller’s return to Indiana isn’t just a homecoming—it’s the beginning of a new era for the Pacers, led by the very heart and soul who defined the franchise for a generation.
