Breaking News: Congratulations to the 60th Drum Major of the Michigan Marching Band, Miguel Retto!
It is with great pride and excitement that we congratulate Miguel Retto on his selection as the 60th Drum Major of the Michigan Marching Band (MMB)! A remarkable student, musician, and leader, Miguel’s journey has been defined by excellence, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to both music and service.
Miguel is a senior from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, majoring in Industrial and Operations Engineering with a minor in Music. Throughout his years at the University of Michigan, he has exemplified what it means to be a Michigan Wolverine—balancing a rigorous academic workload while giving his all to the MMB and the greater band community.
Since his first year in the Michigan Marching Band, Miguel has been a devoted member of the tenor saxophone section, bringing energy, passion, and a sense of camaraderie to every rehearsal and performance. Over his four years with the band, he has risen through the ranks, holding key leadership positions including Rank Leader, Section Leader, and Fanfare Band Conductor. These roles reflect not only his musical talent but also his natural ability to lead, inspire, and uplift those around him.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Miguel’s journey is his involvement with Tau Beta Sigma, the National Honorary Band Service Sorority. As a proud sister of this co-ed organization, Miguel has dedicated countless hours to serving the music community. His commitment includes volunteering to teach private instrumental lessons—a testament to his desire to give back and help younger musicians develop their skills and confidence.
Becoming Drum Major of the Michigan Marching Band is no small achievement. It is a position that demands not just technical precision and musical ability, but charisma, discipline, and a deep understanding of leadership. Miguel has demonstrated all of these qualities and more throughout his time with the MMB. As Drum Major, he will be the face of the band, a role model to his peers, and a symbol of tradition, pride, and excellence on the field.
