Nottingham Forest should avoid signing 35-cap Rangers star in January

Nottingham Forest have been linked with a move to sign Borna Barisic from Rangers in January. However, the Reds must be extremely careful and there is a big argument that they should shop elsewhere.

The Reds have been casting admiring glances at Barisic for a little while. Forest were linked with him in the summer but chose to pursue other options for their left-sided wing-back role instead.

With January fast approaching, Forest are going to have a decision to make over Barisic. It was claimed last month that Glasgow giants Rangers were set to offer the Croatian a new deal to deter admirers.

Forest should tread with caution over Barisic

The Reds could perhaps welcome another left-back into their squad. Harry Toffolo has the shirt for now and on his current form, he doesn’t deserve to lose his place in the team any time soon.

In reserve, Nuno Tavares is on loan from Arsenal; whilst Ola Aina has also showcased that he can operate as a left-sided option should it be deemed absolutely necessary.

Barisic has been with Rangers for some time but Forest have been alerted to his contract situation. He will be a free agent in the summer when it’s likely that several clubs will be keen on him.

At 31, however, there’s an argument that Barisic is the type of player that Forest have been stung by in the past. Barisic is likely to be beyond his best years and the Reds have plenty of options for that position.

Forest must prioritise other positions

The Reds now have a very useful squad. However, injuries have left some positions looking very short and those are the ones that Forest must address over prioritising Barisic.

A winger with a turn of pace and athleticism would be ideal. Being greedy, another striker wouldn’t go amiss either once the transfer window reopens again.

There are just too many boxes that Barisic doesn’t tick for Forest. He’s ageing, the Reds have a number of left-backs and ultimately the Reds have to feel that other areas are in more need of reinforcing.

Barisic has made 218 appearances for Rangers and played 35 times for Croatia. At this stage of his career, however, he just doesn’t feel right for Forest.
