The New Orleans Saints have signed former Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young to a one-year contract, but his future may be in doubt.

The former Commanders pass rusher is scheduled to have neck surgery on Thursday, according to Sports Illustrated source Albert Breer. He added that it was hard for him to find a team to sign him in free agency because physicians wouldn’t pass his physical due to his neck.

These variables led to over $8 million in performance-based incentives under Young’s contract. Additionally, according to Breer, Young will need three to five months of rehabilitation following surgery.

The neck injury was sustained when he had to leave the Commanders’ first preseason game early because of a stinger versus the Cleveland Browns. Young was forced to miss the first game of the regular season against the Arizona Cardinals as well as the remainder of the preseason due to that injury.

Though Young entered the league as the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, injuries have hindered his ability to live up to expectations despite his career long history of showing promise. He played in just 12 games between the 2021 and 2022 seasons due to an ACL tear, and he only recorded 1.5 sacks during that time.

Young recovered for a strong 2023 season, recording 7.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hits for the Commanders and San Francisco 49ers, who acquired him at the trade deadline for a conditional third-round pick. This was after he had a full offseason to prepare rather than recovering.
