First RPI Rankings of 2025 Not Friendly to Oklahoma Softball
In a surprising twist for the Oklahoma Sooners softball team, the first RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) rankings of the 2025 season have not been kind to the defending champions. Despite their dominance in the Big 12 and continued success on the field, the Sooners are currently ranked outside the top five, leaving many fans and analysts questioning the methodology behind the rankings.
Oklahoma, widely regarded as one of the premier programs in college softball, has consistently been at the top of the standings for years. However, the new RPI rankings have placed them in a position far lower than expected, with the Sooners currently sitting at #7. This is a surprising fall, especially after their 10th straight Big 12 Championship title and dominant performances throughout the early season.
The RPI rankings, which factor in a team’s win-loss record, strength of schedule, and the quality of opponents, have been criticized by some for not fully reflecting Oklahoma’s consistent excellence. Despite their strong performance in the Big 12 tournament, the Sooners’ non-conference schedule, while challenging, has been scrutinized for not featuring enough high-ranked opponents compared to other top teams.
Coach Patty Gasso expressed confidence in her team’s ability to rise in the rankings, stating, “We know what we are capable of. We’ve had a fantastic start to the season, and the rest will take care of itself. Our focus is on getting better every day, not just on the rankings.”
Despite the early setback in the RPI, Oklahoma remains a strong contender for another national championship. As the season progresses, many expect the Sooners to climb the rankings and prove that their position in the Big 12 and national softball landscape is indisputable.
