Former Red Wings coach: Mike Babcock resigns in Columbus amid controversy…….

Mike Babcock’s comeback ended before it ever really started.

Babcock resigned Sunday as coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets amid controversy and an investigation of whether he asked players to show him photos on their cell phones and projected those images.

The Blue Jackets announced Babcock’s resignation following an investigation by the NHL Players Association into his conduct. He was hired on July 1.

Babcock, 60, coached the Detroit Red Wings for 10 seasons, winning the Stanley Cup in 2008 and departing in 2015 as the winningest coach in franchise history (458-223-105).

Pascal Vincent was named Babcock’s replacement and signed a two-year contract through the 2024-25 season.

Former NHL player Paul Bissonnette reported Tuesday on his “Spittin’ Chiclets” podcast that Babcock had asked players to show him photos and was projecting them for others to see. The NHLPA soon launched an investigation into invasion of privacy, despite denials from Babcock and team captain Boone Jenner.

“This was a difficult decision on everyone’s part, but one we felt necessary to ensure our focus remains on the players and the team’s upcoming season,” general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said in a statement. “On behalf of the entire Blue Jackets organization, we want to thank Mike for his hard work and the professionalism he has shown in working together on a plan to step down.”

Babcock was fired in Toronto in 2019, four years after signing a reported eight-year, $50 million contract with the Maple Leafs
