Penn State Makes the Required Adjustments In the course of the Spring Transfer Window
Following spring drills, seven Nittany Lions on scholarships logged into the portal. Coach James Franklin of Penn State called it a “interesting” gateway window.
Penn State coach James Franklin mentioned the NCAA Transfer Portal, which opened in two days, when he said he anticipated a “interesting” summer following the Blue-White Game in April. However, despite the fact that seven scholarship players—four of whom this week alone—have used the portal since then, the Nittany Lions’ roster has undergone only minor alterations.
The most well-known person to access the portal this week prior to its closure was safety King Mack, a sophomore who was ranked as the best defensive player by Penn State football’s 2023 recruiting class. Franklin praised Mack, who spent much of the previous season on special teams, for being “fast, aggressive, and violent.”
Mack, running back London Montgomery, offensive lineman Golden Israel-Achumba, receiver Malik McClain, and offensive lineman Mack all accessed the site before to the April 30 deadline, as Rivals originally reported. They entered the gateway during the spring window together with defensive lineman Davon Townley, receivers KeAndre Lambert-Smith, and Malick Meiga. Since then, Lambert-Smith pledged to Auburn.
Since the 2023 season concluded, a total of 12 scholarship players from Penn State’s roster have accessed the transfer portal. Even while the amount seems large, it is a necessary adjustment as Penn State approaches the NCAA 85-scholarship cap. Penn State may still not be there, too. Penn State presently has 91 scholarship athletes on its roster, yet the figures for internal and external scholarships don’t always line up.
In fact, Franklin was questioned about reaching the 85-scholarship cap during spring practice. He seems unconcerned.
Back in April, Franklin declared, “We’re in great shape.” “Don’t see any of those things [being] an issue, and our math’s different than yours.”
