By Thursday afternoon, the Buckeyes’ recruiting class was ranked fourth in the country according to a composite ranking created by 247Sports.
They will have signed a top-five class for the fifth year in a row if the rating holds true, continuing a program-best streak in the age of online recruiting.
The Buckeyes had their longest run of consecutive top-five classes last winter when they brought in the fourth-ranked class, topping two three-year runs under the reign of former coach Urban Meyer.
They remained close to the top of the rankings by holding commitments at the last minute from five-star defensive end Eddrick Houston and five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
Smith, a South Florida native and the class’s top recruit overall, verbally committed to Ohio State in December of last year, but Miami and other in-state colleges persisted in their pursuit of him. Alabama, on the other hand, was attempting to unseat Houston following his visitation last weekend.
Day stated, “There were some pieces that we felt like we had to get.” Did we fulfill every request on the wish list? No, but we have a great deal of stuff.
