I Am Sick and Tired: Collingwood Head Coach Craig McRae Announces His Retirement

In a stunning turn of events, Collingwood head coach Craig McRae has announced his retirement from coaching, leaving the AFL community in shock. McRae, who has been a prominent figure in the football world, cited personal reasons for his decision, expressing that he is “sick and tired” of the constant pressures and demands that come with the role.

The announcement came earlier today, with McRae addressing his players and staff in an emotional farewell. “I’ve given everything I have to this club, but I’ve reached a point where I just can’t keep doing it anymore,” McRae said. “I’m sick and tired of the toll it’s taken on my personal life and my well-being. It’s a decision that has been weighing on me for a while, but I believe it’s time for me to step away.”

McRae’s retirement marks the end of a significant era for Collingwood. Since taking over as head coach in 2021, he quickly established himself as a leader capable of inspiring his players, fostering a strong team culture, and achieving success. Under his guidance, the Magpies experienced a notable resurgence, playing a more attacking and cohesive brand of football. His ability to develop young talent and build strong relationships with his players was central to the team’s improvement.

During his time at the helm, McRae’s leadership was widely praised. He led Collingwood to the finals in 2021 and established a firm foundation for future success. His ability to connect with players, along with his tactical acumen, made him one of the more respected coaches in the league. However, McRae has often spoken about the personal sacrifices required by the role and the toll it takes on a coach’s mental and physical health.

“I’ve given my heart and soul to this club, but it’s time for me to focus on my health and happiness,” McRae continued. “The demands of coaching have become overwhelming, and I need to step away to take care of myself and my family. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved, but it’s time for me to pass the baton.”

Collingwood’s players and staff have expressed their support for McRae, with many acknowledging the positive impact he has had on the club. “Craig has been a fantastic coach and a great person to work with,” said Collingwood captain Darcy Moore. “He gave us everything he had, and we’re all better for it. We’ll miss him, but we understand his decision.”

Collingwood now faces the challenge of finding a new head coach as they look to continue building on the foundation McRae has laid. For now, the focus shifts to honoring McRae’s legacy and supporting his decision as he steps away from the game.
