Lions DE Bruce Irvin reveals reason for exit ‘NFL

    adminBy adminJanuary 9, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read

EDGE Bruce Irvin cut from Detroit Lions practice squad

The Detroit Lions are parting ways with veteran defensive end Bruce Irvin, according to the player’s Twitter account.

The Detroit Lions are starting to make the roster moves necessary to bring players back from injury. On Tuesday, they let go of defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs. On Wednesday, it appears veteran edge defender Bruce Irvin is next.

On Wednesday morning, Irvin tweeted out the following:

“@Lions – as a 12 year vet, thank you for the opportunity to be apart of your team- however I’m looking forward to what’s next.”

While it’s not an outright declaration of being waived, it does appear Irvin is moving on from his career as a Detroit Lion.

Irvin was on the team’s practice squad, so it does not open up a spot on the 53-man roster. However, that open spot on the practice squad could be helpful to re-sign any players Detroit may need to cut from the 53-man roster in order to make room for injured reserve activations like C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Alim McNeill—both of which are expected to happen this week.

Irvin was out of gameday elevations from the practice squad, but as we pointed out on Wednesday morning, that number resets in the playoffs. If Detroit wanted to keep him on the practice squad, they would have been able to elevate him as many times as they wanted during the postseason without having to sign him to the 53-man roster.

Which makes this move a bit of a surprise. Irvin is a veteran player who has been in the playoffs before and could be a valuable player and a veteran mind to have on the team.

That said, Irvin only produced five pressures and one sack in three game appearances for the Lions this year. Additionally, with James Houston returning to practice last week, it’s quite possible that the Lions will use the second-year edge rusher in Irvin’s role for the postseason, even though Houston is not expected to be ready by the team’s regular season finale.
