The Detroit Lions placed tight end James Mitchell on the injury report Thursday ahead of their wild-card game against the Los Angeles Rams.
That means all three Lions tight ends are currently on the injury report.
On Thursday, Sam Laporta gave an encouraging update on his own health, telling reporters that he participated in practice after practice.
Brock Wright missed the past three games with a hip injury, but was a full participant in both practices this week.
If Laporta is unable to play, the Lions will likely turn to Wright and Mitchell to fill the void.
“No matter who we have, we’re always going to do what they do best.
“Laporta has a slightly different skill set than other teams and frankly other teams in the league.
“He’s there,” Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said. “He’s great.
” So, yeah, if he can’t go, other people will have to fill in, and maybe we’ll give them a slightly different job than what we did with Sam. I might request it.
“But it would be great to potentially have Brock back this week. He has quietly been a big part of what we’ve accomplished offensively the last few years. ”
