NCAA Champion Greg Kerkvliet Returns to Penn State for Final Season
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Reigning NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion Greg Kerkvliet is returning to Penn State for his final season, the university announced this week. After a dominant 2024 campaign that culminated in an individual national title, Kerkvliet is set to anchor the Nittany Lions as they pursue yet another NCAA team championship under head coach Cael Sanderson.
Kerkvliet’s decision to return comes as no surprise to Penn State fans, who have watched him develop into one of the most formidable forces in collegiate wrestling. The four-time All-American capped off last season with a statement victory over Michigan’s Mason Parris in the NCAA finals, avenging past losses and securing his first individual crown.
“This program means everything to me,” Kerkvliet said in a statement. “I’ve grown so much here, and I’m excited for one more run with my brothers. The goal is simple—defend the title and bring another team trophy back to Happy Valley.”
Kerkvliet’s return adds more firepower to a Penn State roster already stacked with talent. With fellow NCAA champions like Aaron Brooks and Carter Starocci also expected to compete, the Nittany Lions are primed to extend their dynasty. Under Sanderson, Penn State has claimed 11 of the last 13 NCAA team titles, building one of the most dominant legacies in sports.
In addition to his accomplishments on the mat, Kerkvliet has become a vocal leader within the team and an ambassador for the sport. His work ethic, humility, and relentless pursuit of excellence embody the core values of the Penn State wrestling program.
“Greg’s commitment and growth have been incredible,” Coach Sanderson said. “He’s a special athlete, but even more importantly, a great teammate. We’re thrilled he’s coming back.”
As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Kerkvliet to see if he can repeat as heavyweight champion and help deliver yet another NCAA title to Penn State. His presence sets the tone for a team with championship expectations and a fanbase eager for more glory.
